Recall Big Fire Of 1914

probably the most memorable event
td bo recalled from their school days
will be the big fire on March 25
1914On
On that day the Adminstratlon
Building of the fouryearold college
was destroyed by fire while stu
dents faculty and Canyon townspeople
stood by helplessly watching
In the months that followed classes
were held in Canyon churches stores
and later in improvised barracks
type buildings The present Admin
istration Building long the largest
educational building in Texas was
completed in I91G
The Old Timers Reunion for
exstudents who attended the college
from 1910 until 1915 is expected to
bring more than 300 alumni from
throughout Texas and from several
other states Persons from 20 Pan
handle towns have already written
the VT ExStudents Association that
they are to attend

for the visitors in the WT library
and also planned for display in the
PanhandlePlains Historical Museum

the 410 Naval reserves who departed
here June 20 on a twoweek training
cruise in the Caribbean
The reservists are aboard the escort
vessels USS Wlllctt and Haas
the high speed transport USS Liddle
and the patrol craft USS PCE 846
and 847 The Willett Hass and
Liddle spent last weekend in Miami
Fla The two patrol craft Will visit
Havana Cuba
The five ships will return here
July 1 at which time the reservists
will be released to inactive duty

After fishing the boys enjoyed a
sack lunch supper At 8 oclock the
group assembled around a bonfire
where they enjoyed several
led by Ray Howard and songs were
led by Ernest Gentry of Plainview
Among the games was a sack
race run in two heats Winner of
the first heat was Bill Ed Pinkerton
of Edmonson and winner of the
second was Terry Sparkman of
Plainview The threelegged race
was also run in two heats was won
in the first heat by W G Laney and
son Mark Laney Hale Center and
in second heat by Dan Tucker and
Don Shackelford of Tulia
A hoop race between several of
the packs was won by Pack 63 of
Tulia Prizes in all events were
pocket knives
Twenty four dads who had never
been to CubDads camp previously

Taps was sounded at 10 pm
Following a breakfast over an
open fire the group assembled and
enjoyed an impressive worship service
led by Cubmastcr Ernest Gentry
of Plainiew in the largest church
in the world the great outdoors
Following the worship service the
boys broke camp and reassembled at
the swimming pool at Tulia for a
Ray Howard and Explorer Scouts
Emmitt Rogers and Milton Mickey
Troop 55 Plainview Rogers and
Mickey also acted as life guards The
Scouts expressed appreciation for
a good camp and extended their
gratitude to Sammy Davidson for
donating ice to cool the soft drinks
to Buck Campbell Scout Master for
his assistance to Tulia Park Board
and to Tulia Swimming Pool Board
Appreciation was also extended to
Ray Howard Emmett Rogers and
Milton Mickey for their assistance
and cooperation
Due to the enthusiastic response
from the Dads and Cubs in attend
ance it is the hope and intention to
make this an annual CubDads event
for Hayncs district
