PRINTING a story containing
BEFORE
taining scandal a newspaper
editor should ask himself Will
the good achieved from the publication
of this story be worth the humiliation
and heartbreak which it will
bring to the person involved as well
as to their innocent relatives
Certainly the fear of unfavorable
publicity should serve as a deterrent
to persons who are tempted to
violate the law We think it is a
poor law which prevents publication
of the names of deliberate lawbreakers
just because they happen to be
juveniles
There is less likelihood that the
future of a juvenile will be ruined
because of some misstep than that
of an adult The public is more tolerant
of a wayward youth Wo all
arc ready to step forward and give
him a second chance But just let
an adult who has been in trouble
try to make a comeback Its a horse
of a different color

TOWN TOPICS
UMEROUS INQUIRIES have
come to this office from Tul
ians who dont even know the names
of the men now serving on the
Tulia school board
Who are they and when do their
terms expire was the substance
of most questions
The terms of Charlie Herring and
Harvey Milner expire next April
Buster Sadler and Henry Stout will
be up for reelection two years from
now Butler Copeland and Barbour
elected two weeks ago will serve
for three years
Most of these calls came from
friends of Sam Bryan high school
principal who was fired by the
school board on the eve of the April
2 election at which time the terms
of three of the seven members were
to expire
Herring told us this week
that the board had unanimously
granted Supt Swinburn a threeyear
contract We are very happy to report
this action
TOWN TOPICS
A PROTEST against the firing
AS
ing of Bryan which a great
many people believe was due to invalid
reasons many voters scratched
the name of Featherston in the
recent election because he voted
with the opposition and wrote in
the name of Butler who was not a
candidate for reelection
Herring admitted that the school
board bungled the issue but said
he felt that Featherston was less
guilty than any one of the other
members of the opposition Feather
ston got the brunt of the publics
wrath because he was the only member
of the opposition who was up for
reelection We say this in all fairness
to Featherston since no doubt
the other three members of the opposition
would have fared no better
had they been up for reelection
this year
TOWN TOPICS
i RIENDS OF BRYAN insist that
he be reinstated by the new
board
We have had numerous calls from
persons asking Is there anything I
can do to encourage the reinstatement
of Mr Bryan We think it
would be very much in order for
Bryans friends to let the incoming
board members as well as the holdover
opposition know again how
they feel Many to whom we have
talked said they were under the im
pression that voting for the three
winners in the recent election was all
that was necessary Personally we
dont know how the two new ones intend
to vote when the issue is bro
ught up as it must be but we dont
believe them to be men who would
bow their necks against the wishes of
the majority
Regardless of the outcome we
plan to report how each member
votes
TOWN TOPICS
EVER BEFORE have we seen
community thinking so crystal
lized over an issue If Mr Bryan
didnt know his friends before certainly
he does now
Supt Swinburn heartily recommended
his reelection the faculty
was almost solidly behind him high
school students were indignant at
his dismissal and literally hundreds
of school patrons rallied behind Mr
Bryan
Some believe Mr Bryan did not
