When it operates with as
much absence of government interference
as possible the economy
operates the best the Senator
told Eric Sevareid on a national

he conceded that Federal

late agricultural statistics Here are some of the cold and hard
facts of life
There are only five of the 50 states now relying on farming for
15 per cent or more of their employment In 1860 there were 31
million people in the United States Today there are 188 million
Yet the farm labor force is no larger now than it was 100 years
ago
Fifty per cent of the nations remaining farms arc too small
to provide an adequate living for the people living on them
Since 1944 the farm population has decreased from 18 per cent
of the total population to 11 per cent While the total population
Increased during that period by some 50 million persons the farm
population decreased by some five million
The problem Is even blacker than it appears at first glance
There are many people presently living in rural areas who arent
even farmers In fact 55 million skilled and semiskilled nonfarm
workers are living in rural areas compared with 35 million farmers
and employee giving They are Diane Clower was crowned dis

the farmers still have a few friends in Washington friends
who are still willing to go to bat for them But this friendship is
costing these friends more votes every year Right here in the

Consider the future attitude of strictly urban Congressman on farm

The urban people are misinformed about the farm situation
and there is no news media through which they can get the truth
