SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY
Joseph T. McClain, Dean
(THE INSTITUTE OF CHRISTIANITY)
The School (Institute) of Christianity is designed to make the practice of the
Christian faith more relevant for our world. It shall always have as its primary
goal the thorough training of the Christian student so that he may be equipped
to fulfill the command of Jesus Christ to make disciples and to teach them
what He commanded. Therefore, the School (Institute) of Christianity is dedicated
to help the student understand that the church is God's minister to His
world and to help him live out his Christian faith as he confronts the religious,
moral, intellectual, and social decisions of his life, both now and later.
Ministerial students are encouraged to major in the School (Institute) of
Christianity to meet the suggested requirements of the American Association
of Theological Schools. The School (Institute) strongly recommends that ministerial
students concentrate in Bible, Practical Theology, Honors and Pre-Graduate
Studies or Religious Education as the best preparation for graduate study.
Baptist students who are using the ministerial scholarship in preparing for the
ministry are required to earn the Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Institute or
to take at least a minor in a department of the School (Institute) of Christianity,
excluding Philosophy.
Practical Theology 1110, 3300, and Religious Education 3311 are required of
all ministerial students receiving ministerial assistance from the Baptist General
Convention of Texas.
Because of the need for a broader general education. Students who major in
Bible, Practical Theology, or Religious Education may not minor in one of
these departments or Preaching and Evangelism. A minor should be chosen
in conference with the academic advisor.
