WILLIAM JACKSON GILILLAND, 1903
In 1901 W. J. Gililland bought a section
of land six miles east of Dimmitt
and his family movedthere, living in
a tent until the house was built. In
1903 he m o v e d to Hereford and
boug the Hereford Hotel which was
located between First and Second
Streets across from D. R. Gass and
Son Store.
For his move to the plains, Mr. Gililland
chartered two cars on the railroad
- one for stock and one for
household things. From 1903 to 1906
he ran the hotel and then put in a
furniture store and funeral home
where Gaston Baer is now located.
Later he sold this business to Mr.
Thomas. (At that time his son, Matt
Gililland went to embalming school
in Dallas for three months.)

Mr. Gililland then went into ranching
thirty-five miles west of Hereford.
Old Tombstone was the Gililland
headquarters. He ran the ranch until
his retirement and then settled in
town, owning five acres where Angel's
Studio is now.
William Jackson Gililland was born
March 29, 1855, and died September
23, 1938. Lula Estelle Hart Gililland
was born November 21, 1860 and
died March 17, 1939. They had eight
children: Bertha (Mrs. Sid) Loving;
Matt, deceased; Payne Gililland,
who lives in Cushing, Oklahoma;
Pink Gililland lives in Amarillo;
John Gililland was killed in World
War I just three days before the
Armistice; Cecil Williams of Hereford;
Homer G., deceased; and Guy,
John Richard Gililland died in the service of his country in World
who lives at Red Bluff, California. War I.
