UT Libraries Schedule Two
Spring Exhibitions
Two exhibits by The General Libraries
of the University of Texas at Austin have
been scheduled for this spring.
"Stephen F. Austin of Texas" celebrates
the 200th anniversary of the birth of the
man considered the founder of modern
Texas and features 75 rare documents, maps,
and artifacts.
The event is sponsored by The Center
for American History, University of Texas
at Austin, and the San Jacinto Museum of
History in Houston. Set to run through
March 11, the exhibit is in The University
of Texas Visitor Center in the Arno
Nowotny Building, 709 E. Martin Luther
King Jr. Blvd. Call (512) 471-1420 for

The second exhibit, "Mance Lipscomb:
Grimes County Blues Master," will run
through March 26. The exhibition traces
the life and career of Mance Lipscomb, East
Texas sharecropper and legendary guitar
master.
Sponsored by The Center for American
History, the exhibit is located at the Sid
Richardson Hall, Unit 2 (adjacent to the
LBJ Presidential Library and Museum on

Foundation Awards Grant to
San Saba Mission Project
While meeting in Lubbock in October,
the Texas Historical Foundation Board of
Directors awarded a grant for archaeological
testing at the proposed location of the
Mission Santa Cruz de San Saba in Menard
County. The grant helped fund testing by
a team of archaeologists and volunteers
that recently uncovered evidence marking
the mission site near Menard.
THF PresidentJohn Meadows said, "The
Foundation is pleased to be able to provide
funding for this most worthwhile project.
Locating the mission site provides a vital
piece of Texas history that has been missing
for many years."
In its efforts to support projects and

activities in education, research, archaeology,
and the preservation of Texas history,
the Texas Historical Foundation acts as
administrator of several preservation grants.
Applications for those funds are available
from the Historical Foundation, which
adheres to strict guidelines for all of the
grants.
Applicants for grants are expected to
provide information including a current
exemption letter from the Internal Revenue
Service, bylaws and articles of incorporation,
an explanation of the preservation
project, and detailed financial information.

Applicants should be advised that smaller
requests are in order at the present time,
and those awarded grants will be expected
to provide a full accounting of the use of the
money for which they are applying.

THF Accepting Nominations
For Preservation Awards
Nominations are now being accepted
for the Texas Historical Foundation's Annual
Awards honoring contributions made
to the preservation of Texas heritage. The
awards will be presented at the THF annual
meeting, which is set for April in San
Angelo. The meeting is being held in
-conjunction with the annual meeting of
the Texas Historical Commission.
The Josiah Wheat Award of Merit,
named for the first president of the Texas
Historical Foundation, recognizes outstanding
achievement in historical preservation
from business and industry.
The Mary Moody Northen Award,
named for longtime member and benefactor
of the Texas Historical Foundation,
honors achievements in historical preservation
for a local non-profit historical organization.

The John Ben Shepperd Jr. Award rec

ognizes exemplary craftsmanship for restoration
projects. The Deolece Parmelee
Award is given for outstanding achievement
in historical preservation research.
Citations of Merit may also be presented
honoring preservation projects
conducted within the state of Texas by a
person, group, or business.
Texas Historic Preservation Book
Awards are given for outstanding publications,
research, or writing conducted within
the last year dealing with the state of Texas.
Prior award recipients include The King
Ranch Saddle Shop for restoration of the
John B. Ragland Mercantile Building; The
Galveston Historical Foundation for restoration
of the Rainbow Row homes; and
Mike and Karen Collins for restoration and
preservation of the Moore-Hancock
Homestead in Austin.
THF Board member Shirley Caldwell is
chairing the Awards Committee; nominations
are welcome and should be sent to the
Texas Historical Foundation office in
Austin.
THF Annual Meeting To Be
Held in April in San Angelo
The Texas Historical Foundation will
be holding its annual meeting April 29 and
30 in San Angelo. The meeting is being
held in conjunction with the Texas Historical
Commission's annual meeting, and
all members of the Foundation are invited
to attend.
The Foundation has plans to sponsor a
program on Friday morning, April 29, at
10:30 a.m. focusing on a county-wide historical
identification program that is currently
underway in Atascosa County. The
Saturday schedule includes a THF board
meeting in the morning and an awards banquet
later that day. The Foundation will be
honoring individuals, companies, museums,
and other organizations making significant
contributions to the preservation of Texas
heritage at the awards banquet. (See Preservation
