Canadians first gold star
mother Mrs W W Owens pass-
ed away at the hospital here
Sunday afternoon at one oclock
She was hospitalized In 1948 far
several weeks with a broken hip
which was rebroken In August
of 1947 arid she hadbeen a
hospital patient since that time
with the exception of three
weeks when she was able to be
home
She was born Fannie Louise
lewis to Mahalla Ann Lewis
and Alva Lewis att Trenton 111
In 1860 She was the last sur-
vivor of twelve children
She was married at Olathe
Xans to W W Owens on March
11879 and the couple moved to
Colorado near pueblo where Mr
Owens was associated In the
cattle business with the late
Robert Moody Sr
They moved to Hansford
County Texas in 1881 where
Mr Owens hunted buffalo as
well as handling his ranch
activities Here Mrs Owens
lived a pioneer ranch life In a
plckett house built Into the side
of a hill She stayed by herself
for a week or so at a time while
her husband was on his hunting
trips
Rattlesnakes were plentiful in
those days and Mrs Owens kept
a rod handy which she used to
dislodge the snakes she would
see In the rafters
In 1878 they moved to West
Plains Mo Mr Owens then
made the run from Woodward to
Cheyenne In 1892 Mrs Owens
with her three children Mabel
Walter and Ben and an 18year
old boy to help do the driving
lIt for Cheyenne in a covered
wagon They left Stuttgart Ark
on Nov 11892 and got to Chey
onne on Jan 11893
While living in Cheyenne the
Indians went on the war path
when one of their number
harmless old man was killed by
Red Tom a Texas Ranger while
on a drunken spree
The men took their families
out of the town and returned to
defend it Mrs Owens and her
children were taken to the home
of Billy Petes sister Mrs Minor
Carson who lived fifteen miles
from Cheyenne But Mrs Owens
worried so much during the
night that she finally rode bare
back into Cheyenne getting
there before daylight She cooked
all day for the Indians who in
turn promised Mr Owens who
was well liked by the Indians
protection for his wife and chll
drcn When it was all over and
a massacre and burning of the
town was averted Mrs Owens
went to get her horse to return
to her children but it had been
stolen
The family moved to Canadian
from Cheyenne In January of
1896 They purchased the old Fay
hotel which was located where
the light plant now stands and
moved it to the site now oc
cupied by the Moody hotel It
was later called the Mcintosh
hotel and burned In 1901 or 1905
Mrs Owens was a wonderful
cook and loved to be In a busl
ness where she had an oppor
tunlty to put this art to use
The family moved to Glenrose
in 1925 and here Mr Owens pass-
ed away on Dec 24 1928 Mrs
Owens returned to Canadian In
1929 In 1933 at the age of 73
Mrs Owens a real lover of
pioneer and ranch life filed a
claim thirty miles from Roswell
N M where she lived alone
until she fell and hroke an arm
when she returned to Canadian
later operating a tea room here
called the Arcadian
Mrs Owens always had a veg
ctabltf garden and raised chick
ens She was a lover of flowers
and music playing the piano
Alter breaking her hip the first
time when she was able to re-
turn home from the hospital her
daughter found her playing and
singing
Mrs Ovcis was well known
for her wit and humor She will
he greatly mlsed from the many
organizations of which She was
a member such as the Eastern
Star the Rebekah lodge the
Pioneer club the WCTU and the
American Legion Auxiliary She
was 0 faithful member of the
Methodist church
Five children were born to Mr

Morgan N Davie longtime
manager of the Panhandle lum-
ber company here and a member
of the city commission when the
present city hall was built died
suddenly at Clinton Okla
Wednesday after suffering a
heart attack
Mr Davie and his wife and
children Dorothy and LeRoy
left here for Clinton to make
their homo in 1942 Mr and
Mrs Davie had made Canadian
their home for more than
twentylive years
Funeral services will be held
at Clinton this Saturday morn-
ing at eleven oclock

by the Rev Joe E Boyd In the
home of Mr and Mrs Kenneth
Gibbons at 750 oclock in the
evening the first local wedding
of the New Year
For her wedding the bride
chose a gray wool suit and black
accessories She wore a corsage
of pink carnations and carried a
white Bible For something new
and blue she carried a lovely
handkerchief and for something
borrowed she wore a necklace
Kathryn received her school
ing In Canadian The groom Is
a veteran of World War H hav-
ing served In the Pacific with
the First Cavalry
The young couple will make
their home here where Mr
Justice Is a fireman on the
Santa Fe
Jess Tlpps was able to come
downtown this Friday morning
for the first time since his long
illness
Supt and Mrs Deane Fletcher
went to Austin Monday evening
to attend the annual teachers
meeting
Lee Strader was admitted to
the hospital here this Friday
afternoon with pneumonia
Mr and Mrs Norman Winkle
of Alexandria La visited here
during the holidays Mrs Winkle
remained for a longer visit with
her parents Mr and Mrs Jim
Hutcheson
at birth and one son died at the
age of two years Ben for whom
the ZybachOwens post of the
American Legion was named
was lost in World War I on the

knew him but soon lapsed into
a coma from which she never
recovered
Funeral services were held at
the First Methodist church here
Tuesday afternoon at 3 oclock

received the following letter this
week from a friend ho made
while serving In the Philippines
during the war

My Dear Brother Williams
I am sorry for keeping ycu too
long It Is almost a year now
since I had recelvod your last
Christmas letter I know you
must have been waiting since
then My silence docs not mean
forgctfulness In fact you were
always In my thought That com
panionship we had at North
Beach Signal Depot Is hard to
forget It will be always fresh In
my memory It seems to me It
happened only yesterday Xouj
memory always hunts me when-
ever I take hold of your books
They are helping me a great deal
In my studies of the mystery of
our Lord
I am no longer warklng at the
Signal Depot since 16 Dec 1946
I returned to the service of the
Philippine Republic I am now
an Inspector of the Public Serv-
ice Commission who has super
vision over land transportation
electric plant Ice plant etc I
often go to the provinces for In
spection sometimes for weeks
and months It is a pretty good
Job brother Williams and plenty
of thrills and excitement I was
In this Bureau since 1933 Just
after Iquit teaching in the pub-
lic school
Signal Depot is still at Quezon
City It Is almost run now by
Filipinos It will soon be turned
over to the Republic of the Phil-
ippines There are only a handful
of our boys left Majority of
them about 90 were gone for
good It will soon be transferred
to Pampanga according to mill
tary plan I hope all military
bases will be moved soon before
another world war broke out
< The world is in trouble again
Every body is feeling uneasy
The dark cloud could be seen
thousand cf miles away It could
be seen in Europe in America
and in Asia It Is only a matter
of time It may come tomorrow or
any other day No body knows
but the sign of storm Is coming
Qnjy the blind cannot see that
another world war Is fast ap-
proaching It Is already at his
back God forbade
I am sending you a copy of our
family picture It was taken two
weeks ago In a down town
studio The two youngest kids at
my right are my children to my
second marriage The other three
arp my children to my first mar
rlagc plus the other young man
who Is now In the US Navy

Fred Tepe Dies
Here Suddenly
Frederick John Tepe 55 long-
time Canadian business man
passed away late Saturday night
following a heart attack while
chopping He had not been 111 and
had spent the afternoon hunting
Mr Tepe was buying groceries
In the Best Way store about 700
oclock in the evening when he
told his son Franklin who works
In the store that he did not feel
well Franklin ottered to take
him home but Mr Tepe would
not hear of it and left by the
back door into tile alley
About a half hour later Mr
Tepe was discovered lying in the
alley in an unconscious condition
Ho was rushed to his home and
doctor summoned arriving
there about 800 oclock Mr
Tepo did not rally and passed
away at his home at 1145
Born July 3 1892 ho attended
school here and at Kansas City
Mo He married the former Pearl
Doughty of Alva Okla and was
engaged in the lumber and truck-
ing businesses for the greater
part of his life
Left to mourn his death are his
wife five daughters Norma Jean
and Maxine of Amanita Mary
Ellen and Rose Marie of Cana
dian and Mrs Virginia Lee Gay
lor of Compton Calif three
sons Carl and Franklin of Cana
dian and Edward of Podwin
Kans two sisters Mrs Grace
Spiller and Miss Minnie Tepe ot
Canadian by one brother Ben

here Tuesday afternoon at the
First Methodist church with the
Rev Joe E Boyd officiating Pall-

Burial was made in the Cana
dian cemetery

was entertained in the home of

evening A baked turkey supper

the bridge games which followed

Feature of the evening was a
gilt shower by the club for Mrs

passed away at 430 last Friday
morning at the Elk City hospital
where he had been admitted on
Sunday
Mr Barbee was born In Clark
County 111 He was 70 years old
at the time of his death He was
chairman of the TrlpleA and
held office in many Of the local
drganlzatlons He had been a
member of the Masonic lodge
since 1903
Besides his wife he Is sur

Wednesday at the Northwest
Texas hospital in Amrillo Mrs
Tepe will also undergo surgery
there this Saturday
