To the Central Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, South, in session in Waxahachie, Texas, Nov. 18,
1916.
Dear Fathers and Brethren:
We, your Board of Education, would submit the following
report: Our Church in all its history has never shown such
a quickened interest in the cause of Education as now exists
throughout all our bounds. This is abundantly in evidence, as
is revealed by the increased zeal for the institutions of learning
of a local character. But above all do we rejoice in the evidence
of a deep-seated conviction on this great matter as is expressed
in the fact that our people rise above local and selfish interests
and consecrate their possessions to the establishment and main-
tenance of institutions that can in no possible way affect them
materially and financially. To our Church of a generation ago,
the wonderful achievements in behalf of Emory University and
the Southern Methodist University would have been not only an
impossibility, but the conception of such an achievement would
have been considered a wild dream of an over-wrought imagina-
