But it was something far more important-at least
to Johnson!
"Did you see that man passing in his automobile?"
he cried, forcing me in front of him and nearly shoving
my face through the window. "Say, I would give one
thousand dollars to see that man for ten minutes. He
is a man I met in Judge Hughes' office in New York
City. Did you get a look at him ?"
"I saw him, but he looked about the same as many
other men. Wlas he peculiarly marked ?" I inquired with
inward fun.
I could not resist the temptation to kid him a little,

"Why, he is known as the mysterious man who
took one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars out

sucker I seemed, I piped up:
"I wish we could see that fellow. Maybe he could
make us both some money."
"I'm afraid we cannot," he replied in just the correct
tone of regret. "He is a power in the world of
wealth and we are small fry."
However, I was not at all convinced that the
"mighty one" would not sooner or later "accidentally"
run into us. The handwriting was on the wall.
We got into Daytona at 5:30 that afternoon. I
suggested we walk to the hotel. This met with Johnson's
approval. He hurried on ahead.
When he was some hundred feet in advance of me
I stopped to speak to a woman standing on the front
