NORFLEET
as the car slackened speed, "I would like a lift into town
if you could manage it."
He looked down at me and nodded at two elegantly
attired women in the tonneau.
"We haven't much room today," he replied. "You
see there are two beautifully dressed ladies sitting in the
rear."
I glanced at the cold beauties in the back seat. Instant
action was needed. I might not look as stylish as
they did but I certainly had come mighty near being
beautifully dressed and trimmed myself a few hours ago.
"I've positively got to get into town!" I said.
With that I dived in between the two pretty ladies
and sat down on the seat. It was a "rash" act as Steel
would have said, but necessary. The machine started
and the dolled up ones haughtily drew to the extreme
ends of the seat. This gave me ample room for which
I was grateful to them.
I asked to be allowed to get out at the railroad station
when we reached town. The sixty miles of uninterrupted
travel passed in stony silence.
When we reached the station I said to the driver of
the car, "If you have never played the good Samaritan
before, you have on this trip. I cannot explain but you
have been very kind to me."
He said it was all right, he was glad if he had
helped me.
The train came in and we had no further words.
When I was comfortably settled in my Pullman, I
took out the little crumpled note.
"That is Norfleet, himself. Don't get him started.
If you do, he'll kill every damz one of you. Don't let
him get away, boys. Don't let him get away!-Joe."
So Joe knew I was there. I wondered how he
knew and where he was, and resolved to keep the note
and the first time I met him again, ask him. There was
one thing sure, he was miles away from the place by
the time I got the note.
