CIIAPTER XVII.
A FRISCO "COAL MIINE."
Thinking I had done all I could personally in regard
to capturing Furey and believing I had left the house
in the hands of patient trustworthy watchers, Brown and
I decided we would go to San Francisco and see what
No. 506 Stanford Court Apartments looked like and
if we could trace the mysterious package.
Sheriff Shay was a "Native Son" as they say in the
Golden State. HIe knew every nook and corner of its
mountains, valleys and deserts. He was also well
acquainted with many people in San Francisco as well
as in the South.
I asked Brown what he thought of having Shay
come along to San Francisco with us as my guest.
Brown said he thought it not a bad idea as we
both would be almost total strangers in the city and might
need substantial backing. Through Shay we could get
this. Calling him on long distance, I invited him to go
along, saying that I would like to get acquainted in San
Francisco and didn't know anyone better able to introduce
me to the right people.
He accepted and the three of us left on the morning
train.
On arriving we registered at an obscure hotel. I
registered under the name of E. H. Shaw of Orin Junction,
Wyoming.
Shaw was a wealthy cattleman of that place. I
borrowed his name so if I was questioned about that
part of the country I could answer intelligently.
Our first call was at the Hall of Justice on Kearney
Street where we met Opie Warner, a newspaper representative
of the San Francisco Call. We told our story
to him and asked advice, service and secrecy.
The idea of telling a newspaper man a live story
and in the next breath asking him to keep it a secret.
