NORFLEET
We chose from among them a little red frock and
tam o'shanter. When she got them on she did not look
a day more than fourteen years old. The next day slie
was to meet me on the terrace of the Fairmount Hotel,
directly opposite the Stanford Court. I was then to give
her instructions.
The next afternoon I waited. Soon from the distance
a little girl came toward me. I could scarcely
believe it was the child. She tripped along like my own
little girl of twelve.
"I'm here !" she said, scrambling up over the edge of
the stone coping and sat down beside me on the terrace
grass.
I complimented her on her school-girl appearance
and she said she was glad I approved and felt sure she
would not disappoint me or get thrown out as I had. I
promised to protect her if the police got her and we both
had a good laugh, then she begged me to tell her what
she was to do to be a detective.
"You see," said I, "the idea is this. I want to find
out if Furev lives there. If he does not, then I want
to know who does! Look for him, his picture or a
Hudson seal coat! Find out all and everything you
can." Lucille listened intently.
"You are to pretend you have a little 'Airedale'
puppy to sell. Whoever comes to the door, say that you
have the little dog they bought from your mother and if
they are ready to have it delivered, you will bring it to
them. In this way you may have a chance to talk long
enough to get a line on things."
I gave her two little slips of paper. One of them
had written on it No. 506-but the numeral "6" looked
very much like "1." The loop was all but omitted. It
could have been taken for either one or six. The other
paper had a pin stuck through it and Lucille's telephone
number in plain figures.
I told her to get into the elevator driven by the big
pop-eyed elevator boy. I pointed out to her where this
