seat at Furey's table. My eyes followed his indicating
finger.
At this instant, Furey, opening his napkin, looked up
and saw me. His eyes lingered on mine but apparently
he had not penetrated my disguise, but my general features
stirred in his brain some memory. He continued to
look at me.
I saw recognition come into his eyes. His trembling
fingers clinked the table silver against the china with a
metallic tinkle. In another minute he had himself under
control. He looked out of his eyes like one who sees
but cannot comprehend. He gripped the table with his
hands. The blood receded from his large shapely fingers
leaving them as white as the table cloth. His face
blanched. He pushed the table from him and half rose
from his chair.
At this moment I reached the table and stood directly
in front of him. As he opened his mouth to yell I
"threw down" on him with my gun, exclaiming:
"You can't do it, Furey! You're my prisoner!"
This had no effect, for he raised his voice and cried out
in a loud appeal:
"Don't let him rob me, men! Don't let him rob me!
He'll take my diamonds-Don't let him do it! For
God's sake, men, don't let him!"
At this the dining room was in a panic. Men,
women and children fled. Some ducked under the
tables and others jammed the entrance in an effort to
escape. Jewels were torn from slim fingers by their
owners and stuffed into stockings and bosoms, in an
effort to save them. Men clutched their wallets, watches
and scarf pins.
"Robber! Thief! Murderer! Help! Don't let
him kill me, men! Gentlemen! For God's sake-Help!
Help!" continued to scramble the air throughout the
restaurant.
Shrieking women. screaming children, and cries of
"Police!" "Police!" filled the atmosphere.
