to get a car and was to meet me there.
I did not wait for any information-desk ceremony
but burst into the place like a bomb.
A door was standing open a little way down the
main corridor.
I heard the chatter of female voices. I looked in.
There was Furey!
He was half lying, half reclining on one of the beds.
Around him were a half dozen fluttering women.
They spoke in soothing tones and ministered unto
the suffering one like grey doves of peace.
I dashed into their midst.
They scattered as if someone had thrown a brick
into their crumbs of mercy.
I felt a wave of relief sweep over me at the sight
of Joe.
"Hello, Furev!" I said. "How did you get down
here ?"
Belligerent glances were focused on me.
"How did he get down here?" the spokeswoman
repeated. "Why we went up and brought the poor man
down here where he can be kindly cared for. He is a
poor suffering man and we are going to defend him with
the last drop of our blood!"
"That will be appreciated by Mr. Furey, I am sure.
He is quite used to bloodshed!"
Furev sent me a sarcastic look.
"Well!" continued the mother bird of the "Humane"
ones, "our doctor says he is a very sick man and in his
condition it would be at least fifteen days before he
could travel! You cannot touch him!" the chorus cried,
and moved to surround his bed.
I followed them and stood on tiptoes looking over
the white caps of the noble nurses at Joe, who lay in
state on the white cot surrounded by the wreath of invincible
protectors. All the denied maternity came into
their service and I half expected them to give him a
