It was necessary for me to return home in order
to raise my portion of the money. Spencer supposedly
wired his home in Salina, Kansas, for his part.
Accompanied by Spencer I left that day for my
home in Hale County. Spencer planned to make a personal
inspection of my stock farm with a view to purchase
for the supposed "Green Immigration Company."
As we were leaving the Dallas Interurban Station,
I noticed Ward, the Secretary of the Exchange, waiting
at the depot. I saw him again on the train out of Fort
WNorth for Sweetwater. When Spencer and I were
seated in the dining car, Ward again appeared. He came
into the car with a tall young man dressed in a soldier's
uniform. They sat at the same table with us. Ward
was very talkative, suggesting the different things we
should eat, and in a general way was very congenial.
On arriving at Hale Center, Spencer and I left the
train. Ward remained going, we later learned, to Plainview.
Spencer and I then went out to my ranch where
he made a careful examination of the soil. He visited
the different rent houses, went to adjoining farms where
threshing was in progress, examined the threshed wheat
and growing wheat crops. He appeared profoundly interested
in the country and conditions.
We stayed on the ranch two or three days, where
he seemed to enjoy the hospitality which my wife and
I extended him. During his stay on the ranch, he
assured Mrs. Norfleet that from what he had learned of
the land, improvements, and condition of the country
in general, he was certain his company would buy; in
fact, he assured her that she could depend on it and
that he would pay us in cash $102,600.00, which was our
price, in plenty time for us to meet the Slaughter obligation.
Spencer and I started on our return to Dallas, going
to Hale Center where I stopped off. Spencer and my
