NORFLEET
imbursed for my traveling expenses, inasmuch as the
State of Texas had benefitted so much through my operations
in rounding up the swindlers.
I had, of course, borne all the expense out of my
own pocket. My funds were getting lower and lower
and I thought if I could get State help I would be very
glad, as I still had Spencer to find and had no idea how
long it would take me. While he was the last of the
gang, still it might take as long to get him as it had
taken to get the other four. There is no telling about
these things.
I stopped off at Fort Worth on the way there and
gathered up the court records and other necessary data
with which to support my claims for recompense. Just
as I was ready to continue my journey to Austin I met
District Attorney Brown.
"Hello, Norfleet!" he cried. "Heard the news?"
"No!" I exclaimed, thinking that probably Spencer
had been caught.
"Well, Reno Hamlin has forfeited his bond and is
gone again!"
"Reno Hamlin gone!" I exploded. "Now I've got
to go after him again!"
I suppose when I was congratulating myself that
Spencer was the only one left to get I should have
knocked on wood. Now Hamlin was roaming 'round
wild. I wondered if by the time I got him would Furey
be out and then when I could catch Hamlin again if it
wouldn't be Gerber's turn for freedom and when he
would be safely landed back in the pen, why Anderson
and Lips would have their chance.
It was like trying to hold down six keys with five
fingers-every time I press one down another pops up.
However I decided to get the Legislature business out
of the way first and then take up the trail again.
I saw Governor Pat Neff and appeared before the
various committees at the Legislature. They all seemed
more than eager to repay me for my expenditures.
