NORFLEET
hand would collide with it before he could throw it
aside and obtain his gun. This would lose him sufficient
time to give us command of the situation.
He turned over and faced the other way, saying:
"You've waked me up for sure now, Mulligan."
He did not go to sleep again and every now and
then we spoke a few words.
Between the tobacco in my eyes and the pain in my
foot I fought off sleep.
I looked at my watch.
It was a quarter of six.
The key was still in the locked door.
I was dressed, by this time and an early summer
sun sent slanting rays across the grass green carpet. In
a few minutes, seeing that Davis showed no signs of
getting up, I walked over to the door and put my hand
on the knob.
"I wonder if it rained last night. Seemed to me
like I heered it comin' down." I unlocked the door and
opened it a wide crack; stuck my head out and looked
out on the dry streets through the hall window opposite
our door.
Davis quickly sat up in bed.
I closed the door, twisted the key over and back. It
sounded like one turn, but was two, which left it unlocked.
Davis slowly lay down again.
I looked at my watch.
One minute of six! The little ticks pounded like
steam hammers.
I moved over to the foot of his bed. The footboard
covered my body from the waist down. My right
hand was on my gun, my left on the top of the board.
"I didn't sleep well last night," Davis said drowsily.
"At home, I sleep on down mattresses, with down comforts
over me and my head on little down pillows. I
certainly wasn't built for anything but comfort!"
One! Two! . . . One! Two! The last time lighter.
