CHAPTER III.
A "SANTONE" SHOPLIFTER.
From the moment I was victimized, I naturally
groped for every clue, no matter how small, on which to
work toward the capture of the six men. Fragments
of conversations, to which I had paid little attention at
the time, kept running through my mind. Bit by bit I
tried to put them together, hoping in some way to fit the
jig-saw pieces into place and get a logical start.
During this time the vision of a little red leather
pocket address book such as most men carry in their
vest pockets, kept tumbling in and out of my mental
filing cabinet. One day it came to me that I had seen
a book of this description lying on the bed in the room
occupied by Stetson, Spencer and myself. I recalled
picking it up and glancing through it to settle its ownership.
It belonged, as I remember, to Stetson. It contained
a long list of men's names all entered in different
hand-writing.
Among these was the name of a Mr. Cathey of
Corpus Christi, Texas. The reason I remembered
Cathey's name, I suppose, was because I knew him. At
the time I thought nothing of it; now it occurred to me
that probably Cathey was merely one of the string of
prospective victims. This little book was what contained
the "sucker list."
The more I considered the matter the better I
thought it would be to go to Corpus Christi, see Cathey
and find out if he had been approached by any of the
gang. If they were "negotiating" with him now, I
might get them and if they had not yet "sprung," I
could warn him and when they did spring, he could let
me know.
My wife returned to the ranch and I left to find
Cathey. On the way to Corpus Christi I stopped off at
San Antonio. I knew this was a great sporting town.
