more I thought about it, the stronger grew the conviction
that within the little red address book which I had
found on the bed, lay some solution to my problem. I
was positive that the confidence men were not ignorant
of his wealth and that his name was there for no good
purpose. If California was as full of "slickers" as is this
part of the country, I sighed for Cathey's holdings.
Perhaps he will be the prospect instead of the prospector,
I thought.
The immediate need of reinforcing my funds demanded
I return home by way of Plainview, where I
held a conference with my bankers of the Guarantee
State Bank of Plainview. I laid the entire affair before
them, relating my intention of running down the fugitives
and putting my own brand of capture on them.
The bankers assured me of their undivided support
and whatever assistance in a financial way I needed.
I was told not to worry about my financial obligations
until I came back. At Hale Center, my home town, I
was told virtually the same thing. The peace of mind
I enjoyed during my man-hunt due to their co-operation
allowed me to concentrate on the dangerous job
ahead without worry of financial pressure. I am deeply
grateful to these fine friends who were loyal in time of
trouble.
Another thing I did before returning home was to
swallow mv pride and give a full account of my case
to all the leading newspapers, including the Associated
Press. It told the methods used by these crooks to defraud
and outlined their general attack by way of the
wallet. In the articles I appealed to the public to help
me apprehend the scoundrels.
I received much valuable information through this
appeal. Letters from every part of the country poured
in for three years. Some thought thev had found the
gang, or one or more members of it. \While they seldom
sent in anything pertaining to my particular cases, their
interest in the whole affair sharpened their eyes and
