4N ORFLEET
ever I set it down as a figment of my imagination and
proceeded to leave for an interview with the barber.
When I left the office I was wearing a wide brim
Stetson hat such as the cow-men in my part of the
plains wear, an old and worn corduroy suit; the trousers
tucked in the slant-heeled high cow-boots. My mustache
was much as nature had directed it. When I returned,
my upper lip was as clean as a whistle and my hair
clipped close. I had changed my ranch clothes for a
neat, inconspicuous grey business suit and in place of the
big hat with the cleft in the crown, I wore a cap.
'I'll thank you to give me my suitcase and overcoat,"
said I to the officer in whose charge I had left
them.
"You'll thank me to do what?" he returned, giving
me the up-and-down.
I repeated my request for my belongings.
"Say! how do you get that way? Those things
belong to a West Texas cow-man. What'cha tryin' to
pull off?"
I finally convinced them I was the rightful owner.
Their surprise and chagrin at not recognizing me was
evident in their effort to pass off the "joke on them" in
a careless way.
Delays still blocked me. On returning to San
Bernardino I found Sheriff Clark was there with the
requisition papers.
But the authorities of that jurisdiction refused to
let us budge the men on a "charge" demanding that we
get a "true bill" of indictment.
Jesse M. Brown, District Attorney at Fort Worth,
was forthwith wired to call a special session of the
grand jury to convene on the day I arrived, which would
be as soon as I could get to Fort Worth.
As I remember I left the next day.
I am a sociable soul, which is one of the marked
characteristics of West Texans. When I was addressed
