CHAPTER VIII.
A LONG NIGHT'S VIGIt.
At Clearwater I went immediately to the Sheriff's
office. Although several days had elapsed between the
robbery and my meeting with the Bockermans, I thought
perhaps since the letter from the Sheriff's office had been
received, some clue might have developed.
The officer on duty was seated on a high stool in
a caged off portion of the room which separated the
general waiting room from the executive part. At his
side was a large oak desk and in front of him was a
counter, across which the townspeople seemed to be
shoving their taxes. A high latticed partition reached
from the counter half way to the ceiling. In front of
him the wicket was open and his sour countenance was
framed in the oval.
He scratched a "paid" on a tired looking woman's
receipt, flipped it back at her, snapped his pen behind
his ear and lifting his half-chewed cigar on his tongue
set it in the opposite corner of his mouth. He squinted
at me and uttered some sound which I took to be "next !"
As enthusiastically as possible in the face of such
gloom, I explained that I had just come from Brother
and Sister Bockerman.
He knew about their being robbed?
Yes he knew all about it!
"Well !" said I, tapping a little friendly tattoo on
the counter. "I suppose you do. The papers spoke
quite freely on the subject."
. His upper lip lifted off his stained teeth. I thought
he was going to snap at me.
I continued my explanation. "I have a little time
on my hands and came over to offer my services in the
search for those infamous hounds who got their money.
I hate to see them lose it!"
"Well," he sneered, "all I hate about the thing is
