He felt there was a leak in security in the RRC.

Well, the Federal Petroleum Board couldn't let the Railroad
Commission know anything about our investigation. It
would go immediately to the operator, the illegal operator,
or the operator under investigation. We had to keep it as
quiet from the Railroad Commission agents as we did from
the operator himself.
He confirmed that he had knowledge of slanted wells being drilled in the East
Texas Field:
Q. ... Now, will you tell us whether or not in your capacity
as an investigator or as a member of or as chairman of the
Federal Petroleum Board you ever had any information or
knowledge or reason to believe that there were any slanted
wells being drilled in the East Texas Field.
A. Yes, sir.
He pointed to the law suits and fines that had been tried and paid, all of which
were matters of public record, dating as far back as 1953.
An investigation even carried him to Duval County to a lease adjoining Archie
Parr, which investigation he quickly abandoned.
A. ... when bang, bang, bang, the shots fired, you know, fired
three shots in succession quick, and I then--of course, I
picked up my speed to get away from there. .. and I said,
"Pat, they are shooting at me, " and he said, "I know it" and
we Tot in the car and they really chased us all the way to that
little town Buena Vista. You know where Archie holds forth?
What is that?
Mr. Hale: San Diego.
. . . San Diego. They chased us to there-well, through there
in fact, after we got on through there and got in the next
county we slowed down. It was a new Ford car and I really-I
was driving it and I burned that car up.
Their investigations included subpoening certain records:
Excuse me, but Mr. Lewis just forgot one thing here.
On this about the Eastman Well and Universal Oil Tool Company,
that is really worth this Committee's knowing, He didn't
mention the fact that in that subpoena of accounts that there were
