the sport through the
air, flying
straight and
true, it bounces then lands on the
flat green surface near the hole. Tap
in an easy putt, and you're home. It
sounds so easy, but the game of golf
is one of the most difficult sports to
play well on a consistent basis. Tiger
Woods, arguably the world's best
golfer, loses three out of four times
he competes.
It is a game of staggering scale,
with three hundred-yard fairways
that are dotted with trees, water haz-
ards, and sand filled bunkers. At the
highest levels, one wrong move caneliminate you from competition
early, leaving you to watch with the
spectators as a lucky few play for
glory.
It is a misunderstood sport,
and is not well known at the college
level. But it should be. The North
Texas students that take up this
sport are athletes, working hard for
little press coverage or recognition.
The men's team has new lead-
ership this year. Coach Jim Jackson
came to us from Southwest Texas
State where he had been coaching
since 1988, and graduated with a
degree in Education.
The men's team competed in
several tournaments this year, wrap-
ping up with the Sun Belt Confer-
ence Tournament. They started thefinal round in third, but unfortu-
nately slipped to fifth with a final
round score of 301 and a total score
of 900.
The Lady Eagle's are also un-
der somewhat new leadership.
Coach Laura Rolf is in her second
year as head coach of the Lady Eagles
golf team, after lettering here four
times.
The women's team competed
in the Lamar Invitational, the Oral
Roberts Invitational, and finished
up the school year with the Sun Belt
Conference Championship Tour-
nament, where they finished 9th.
With little recognition on cam-
pus, both teams fought hard to bring
pride to their sport and their univer-
