Track is among the
world's oldest sports. It
a c h i e v i n g is the embodiment of
ancient warfare and
gre at competition. It is one
of the easiest sports to
measure success, yet one of the most
difficult to improve. The goals of a
track and field athlete are simple; run
faster, jump higher, throw farther.
Doing it is another story altogether.
North Texas is developing a proud
tradition in track and field competi-
tion. Track and Field Director Rick
Watkins, now in his fifth year at NT, is
rapidly molding his team into a con-
tender ready for national competition.
In 1998, he had the first NCAA quali-
fiers from NT in 11 years. He won the
Sun Belt Conference Championship
Tournament in 2000 and was outdoor
coach of the year. 2000 was also the
first time in 33 years that NT had two
championships in a calendar year.
With that success behind him, this
year was no surprise. The team did
remarkablywell in several tournamentssport
david gurney, writer
dana harms, layout designer
and was Sun Belt Conference Men's
Champions. The team excelled at the
TCU invitational, the North Texas
Quad, and the UTA open. Lupe Florez,
Jessica Shockley, Sammy Dabbs and
Remarcus Smith turned in outstand-
ing performances throughout the year
in leading North Texas to the Confer-
ence Championship.
With the best season in years, it
comes as no surprise that this team is
moving into the national spotlight and
becoming a real NCAA contender.
With several team members named
Conference athlete of the week, this
season, the team has a bright future
ahead of it. Since coming here, Coach
Watkins has overseen a steady im-
provement in the track and field team.
Under his leadership, there have been
66 all conference performances as well
as 25 new school records set. He is
shaping the team for the present and
the future. They are already a good
team, Coach Watkins and the Track
Team are now looking forward to
achieving greatness.courtesy of steve burlotta
