the hole" with her seven iron. The equation is simple: 1 senior leader, 2
promising freshman, and 3 returning lettermen,
coupled with the knowledge and guidance of a
proven head coach, the North Texas Lady Eagle
Golf Team's horizon looks bright.
"We've had a season of highs and lows with
nothing in between... But I can say we're due a
high," said Cindi Padgett.
Having grown-up in a family of great coaches,
most notably an uncle that held the most coach-
ing wins in NCAA baseball history, Padgett has
a lot of experience to draw from. She studied
under Paul Hogan, was a highly successful pri-
vate instructor, helped to found the UT-Pan
American women's golf program, and Sun Belt
Conference Coach of the Year in 1995.
The only returning senior, Randi Gauthier,
Sugarland, Texas, continued on the high she cre-
ated in the 2002 season when shewas selected again
to the All Conference Sun Belt Team by shooting a
team-and-season best round of 69 at the North Texas
Lady Eagle Invitational.
At her last match as a Lady Eagle, the Sun Belt
Conference Tournament, she finished with a strong
tie for fourth place.
"Anytime you lose a player like Randi, and Randi
has had such a phenomenal year, it always looks like
it's going to leave a void, but at the same time I think
it's a real inspirational motivator to the other playersto step up to the plate and make up for it," said
Padgett
The guidance and teachings of Coach Padgett ob-
viously ignited a new confidence in the Lady Eagle's.
"Oh yeah, it will definitely help our program, she's
added certain good tournaments... .I think she'll do a
good job recruiting and her knowledge in golf is really
good," said freshman Andra Lancaster.
Kasey Hardin, junior, Post, Texas competed in all
eleven tournaments, scoring a best round of 73, four
strokes lower than her 2001-02 best of 77. Brooke
McCutchen, sophomore, Bronte, Texas, competed in
eight tournaments and played her best round of 78
for the home crowd at the September Lady Eagle
Invitational.
"I've had two freshman come in and really step up
to the plate and do really well," said Padgett.
At the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Andra
Lancaster placed 11th after finishing three rounds
with a 73, 75 and 82 respectively. Fellow freshman
Jaclyn Golden, put a 75 on the board as her best
round at the Bearkat Invitational
A season record of 63-82 with such highlights as
top five finishes in four out of the 11 tournaments
played, and a respectable fourth place finish in the
Sun Belt Conference Tournament shows the poten-
tial of the Lady Eagles.
Padgett confidentlybelieves that the team is on an
upward movement.V
