variegated in surface, and watered with streams as
clear as crystal; to be, in fine, a Paradise.
Of the most northern portion of Texasf extending to
the 42d degree of north latitude, parallel with Massa.
chusetts and Connecticut, still less is known than of
the table lands. This region is said to he intersected
by many streams of water power, and to be rich in th but it is known to be of
great fertility and of surpassing beauty. In this region
will the Texan emigrant soon plant his cottage, and
soon will his cotton, and his corn, and his wheat, be
borne along the current of Red River to the great mart
of the West.
The Sabine is to Texas a valuable river. It is navigable
for steamboats at all seasons seventy or eighty
miles, and at high water one hundred or more. Its
banks are seldom overflowed, are well timbered, and
generally fertile.
The Trnity is generally about eighty yards wide,
and eight or ten feet deep, with a rapid current. At
its mouth there is a broad sand bar, which is the only
obstruction to its navigation by steamboats for a dia
