STATISTICS, and New York is, to-day, and constantly,
the resort of every species of bad character. By a late
report of the Police, it appears that four thousand indi.
viduals were presented for trial in the city of NewYork
in the course of one year. Now, the population
of New-York is, we will say, three times that of Texas;
but not a third, no, nor an eighth part, of four thousand
individuals, have, in the same time, been presented for
trial in Texas; and offenders against the law do not
now more escape trial in that country, than in any
other, as new and thinly settled. Indeed, if, in the pro.
portion of the entire population of Texas to that of the
city of New York, there were as many criminals and
other bad characters in the former as in the latter, it
would be impossible to live in Texas with any thing
like security of person or property, because of its extent
of territory and scattered population.
But it is not admitted, nor the fact, that a large portion
of the people of Texas are of the character above
described. According to the best information which
the author was able to obtain, whilst in Texas, in re.
spect to the morals of the people, down to the commencement
of the war in 1835, there could not be found
in any of the United States of the North, a people more
generally honest, honorable, hospitable, kind and peace.
able, than were the people of Texas. Bankrupts and
outlaws from the United States, had, to be sure, settled
among them, and particularly along the boundary of
the two countries; but they had not corrupted the corn.
