HEXISFAIR $200 MILLION DOLLAR DREAM
by
William R. Sinkin
President
San Antonio FairIno.
The great symbol of community cohesiveness; the "leap-frog' into
the future for the entire Southwest; the total commitment of a city
is symbolized by the exciting and striking development of HEMISFAIR
1968. In 1962, Congressman Henry B. Gonzales, projecting his 20th
1] century plan for the 20th District, asked a group of businessmen to
meet to discuss this program, particularly what he then designated
as a "Fair of the Americas". From the very beginning, industrialists,
the bankers, the media, the dreamers, all saw the possibilities of such
a Fair for this area
VI After some eight months of study by a small steering committee, it
was decided that it would be necessary to make a total feasibility study
in order to determine whether or not this community could or should
undertake such a gigantic project. Perhaps for the first time in San
Antonio's history, all 26 banks agreed on one thing-wm-that this was a
project worth pursuing, and through the Clearig House they put up the
first monies necessary to do the research. Economic Research Associates
of Los Angeles, made a three months surrey for us and came up with the
following basio facts
1. That San Antonio is one of 12 communities in the country
that could put on such a Fair.
