My esteemed Sir and friend:

I arrived in this city after sixteen days
of sea travel and shall continue in fifteen
days to my destiny. I will now tell you the
news. It is evident that Spain burns in a
civil war that will last a long time and will
be bloody. The queen dowager has thrown
herself into the hands of the Francophiles and the liberals
of the Cortes: Carlos has the friars and the
clergy. Therefore, these latter also have
the Holy Alliance, at least surreptitiously whereas the former
have England and France.

This manifests the reach of this
war which we can use to our
advantages, if we want it directly, but
at the very least indirectly, among which is the diminution
of our army and the total destruction
