But this is eclipsed by some ex-
periments that were carried out in
Cheapfluke bay this week where
small boats were sent off from the
warshipsandby raining the aerial
wire on an oar were able to talk
two or three miles with perfect
ease It is interesting to remem-
ber in this connection that there
was a fake story written about the
wireless telephone as far back as
1898 It was just before the war
with Spain when the Marconi
wireless telegraph was coming in-
to prominence that a correspond-
ent in Washington wrote for his
paper in a spirit of jest a serious
account of how the navy was ex-
perimenting with and had all but
adopted a system of telephoning
without wires The story was a
joke almost on the face of it and
very few people were taken in by
it But it shows that there is very
little in the scientific and mechan-
ical line that it is safe to jest
about
Just now there is a serious sug-
gestion made to combine the Navy
and the Seacoast artillery There
are a few arguments in favor of
such a course and a good many
against it The Seacost artillery
has to do with the defense of har-
bors the laying of mines and
standing off hostile fleets in gener J ffie Kind YOU Have AlWaVS BOUgllt
al
ItB work is more closely allied
with tha navy than it u with the
army for all of its active opera
tions are consummated beyond low
tide It seems quite logical that
the coast artillery Bhonld work in
harmony with the navy especially
when it comes to torpedo work and
the handling of mine fields On
the othar hand this branch of the
service has an organization of its
own and haB always been used to
being allied to the army And a
good many of the officers of the ar-
tillery say that they will resign if
the mooted change is put into ef-
fect The country has spent al-
ready 8100000000 on seacoast
fortifications and the guns have to
be manned and tended to prevent
deterioration There 6eems no
particular reason why the seacoast
guns should be under the navy in-
stead of the army and if it is going
to raiS9 a row among the officers
and lead to any resignations it
would seem the wiser plan to drop
the mrtter and let the two branch-
es of the service remain separate
as before It would not be con
ducive to good work to draft the
gunners into another branch of the
service against their will

AN APPEAL
I want the citizens of Texas to un
derstand the Farmers Union I want
the cooperation of every loyal and pat-
riotic man woman and child in this
State regardless of their occupation or
profession For these reasons offer
this brief explanation of what we are
trying to do and earnestly ask that ev
ery one having the best interests of the
State at heart to line up with us
We want to control the price of the
products of the farm Therejyou have
the sum and substance of the whole
proposition
Incidentally ours is an educational
and fraternal organization We want
to educato ourselves in the science of
agriculture and in the business of farm-
ing We believe that our demand that
cotton be priced at the point of produc-
tion instead of on the cotton exchanges
ofNew York and Liverpool to be a just
and reasonable one and we believe
that with the cooperation of all honeBt
Tex an s we can enforce that demand
We do not intend to dabble in poli-
tics but we will ask the enactment of
laws for the protection of the best in-
terests ofall the people of Texas We
never have and we never will ask for
laws giving us any special privileges
and we always have and always will
oppose all laws that give special privi-
leges to any class
This is the first of the great farmers
orgon zations to take the whole people
into its confidence and to ask the co-
operation of all the people
We do not propose to start stores
nor banks nor factories nor anything
else as an organization We do not
propose to meddle with the business of
other people Some people have criti
cised us for maintaining an office for
the purchase of supplies but I will take
this occasion to inform the public that
at our last State meeting an amend-
ment was ordered submitted to the
members abolishing the office of Busi-
ness Agent thus clearly showing that
the Farmers Union intends to confine
its efforts to the proper purposes of a
farmers organization without in any-
way interfering with other lines of
business This amendment is sure to
carry as t e farmers are intelligent
and sincere lh their purpose of attend-
ing to their own busihess and allowing
all other classes the same privilege
We ask and earnestly hope that every
loyal Texan will lend moral and mate-
rial support tothe farmers in their ef-
fort to hold cotton at a stable priee
Cotton is worth 15 cents per pound and
if we stand pat backed by the entire
citizenship of Texas and the South we
will win the fight Once won the vic-
tory is to the South for all time to
come The prosperity that follows will
be enjoyed ot alone by the farmer hut
by all the people

Thomas A Edison the great Ameri

cent of the illness of mankind comes
from eating improper food or two much
food people are inclined to over indulge
themselves This is where indigestion
finds it beginning in nearly every case
The stomach can do just so much work
and no more and when you overload it
or when you eat the wrong kind of
food the digestive organs cannot possi-
bly do the work demanded of them It
is at such times that the stomach needs
help it demands help rbd warns you

nauesa and indigestion You should
attend to this at once by taking some
thing do the work for the stomach
Kodol will do this It is a combination
of natural digestants and vegetable
acids and contains the same juices
found in a healthy stomach It is pleas
