PANAMA NOW
IN THE SWIM
Administration Will Fully Back
New Republic Democrats
to Oppose Canal Treaty
Washington Nov 12 Those who
have the ear of the president declare
he will not recede ono step from the
position assumed with reference to
Panama and that the independence of
the istiimus will be maintained if the
United States has to fight to that end
Further assurance although unof-
ficial came today of Colombias desire
to revoke tho former action taken
with reference to the canal treaty and
there is now little doubt but that coun-
try would gladly ratify tho treaty she
rejected were tho opportunity given
her to do so
Tho adminstration has fully deter-
mined upon its course however and
the next negotiations for a canal ronte
will bo with tho new republic of Pana-
ma Such negotiations it can also be
said will bo opened at tho eariist day
possible
The democratic senators have deter-
mined to oppose the ratification of the
canal treaty with the new republic of
Panama should the adminstration en-
ter upon treaty negotiations with that
country which it is certain to do
