ACTING DEPUTY
CITY MARSHAL
Fred Bordeaux Appointed By His
Father Appointment Will
Meet Opposition
Fred Bordeaux son of City Marshal
George Bordeaux is now acting dop
uty city marshal having been ap-
pointed by his father
Members of tho city council have
raised the question of whether or not
Mr Georgo Bordeaux should bo re-
tained as city marshal being disabled
suggested that if Mr Bordeaux would
appoint a capable man to act as dep-
uty it would be satisfactory to tho
board It is supposed Mr Bordeaux
was acting upon this suggestion when
he made tho appointment
This appointment is not meeting tho
approval of some of the councllmen
and tho question comes up now as to
the right of Mr Bordeaux to mako
such appintment llGre is tho law on
tho question
Section 1 article 407 of tho revised
statutes of tho state of Texas provides
that The marshal of the city shall be
exofllcio chief of police and may ap-
point one or more deputies tho ap-
pointment of which deputies Bball on-
ly be valid upon tho approval of tho
city council
A Growing Business
One of tho fast growing concerns in
Palestine is the Martin Steam Laun-
dry Within the past few dais a new
wagon has been put on and this makes
three that are required to call for and
deliver packagos Today there has
been installed a new collar and cuff
machine And this laundry has a rep-
utation for the higher class of finish-
ing second to nono in tho state and
this accounts for tho installation of
this machine The building is already
crowded with machinery and it is all
kept running on full time This laun-
dry does outoftown work for a num-
ber of tho adjoining towns and is tak
Jng laundry work awayfrom
where thoy have laundries that are a
good as tho average That Is what
laundry far above tho average is ca-
pable of doing Another thing about
this laundry worthy of notlco it is one
of the cleanest places in town Tho
interior is painted an immaculate
white and everything is kept in the
very best of order It is a most de-
serving institution

SCHOOL CENSUS
IS COMPLETED
Capt S P Allen Finishes a Big
Job Gain of Eighty Over
Last Year
Capt S P Allen who has been en-
gaged in taking tho scholastic popula-
tion of tho city since May the first has
finally completed his task and tho
figures mako a nice showing for the
city The number of white children
in Palestine coming within the schol-
astic popnlation is 1463 and negroes
and at the last meeting some of them j 1056 making a total of 2319 This is a
gain of 80 over the census of last year
Tho Captain says he does not be-
lieve any one has been overlooked
and he has used every means possible
to secure a correct and full census and
does not think be has failed to get
them all This has been a big job aud
we venture tho assertion that one not
familiar with the town could not have
accomplished tho results In the same
length of tlmo This is a nice showing
for the city and again emphasizes the
very great need of tho city for more
school room
