Chicago 111 Nov 6 The telegra-
phers strike will bo ended late this
afternoon unless all signs fail The
ponce committee will make its report
tbls afternoon and It is said the com-
panies refused to meet the committee
from the union The Chicago union
will vote again on ending the strike
as the vote taken last night did not
have the twothirds necessary to car-
ry
Superintendent Cook of the Western
Union announced today that if the
strike Is declared off tonight the old
men will be put back to work without
prejudice Strikebreakers who prove
competent will be retained and the
old men will be taken back as they
arc needed

cock surrendered to the police today
< Hitchcock has been ill at a house in
this city He shows results of the
strain he has been under He was
immediately arraigned and entered a
plea of not guilty He furnished bond
for 7500 in one count and was pa-
roled on the other five counts and
placed in the custody of his attorney

Kentucky has gone republican an ef-
fort will be made by the friends of
Caleb Powers to have his fifth trial
postponed until Augustus R Wilson
takes over the reins of government
Wilson as governor of the state will
have power to appoint a special Judge
to hear the case and he will naturally
appoint a republican The trial is set
for next Monday The friends of W
S Taylor and Charles Finley who
have been in exile since the murder of
Governor Gocbcl say they will now
return to the state
