Commencement exercises of
the Schwertner high school and
grammar school were held Fri-
day evening at 8 o'clock in the
school auditorium at Schwertner.

Rev. Hill addressing the
graduates said "success is not
measured by the acquisition of
material things but in know-
ledge of life." He grouped the
major activities of man into
four fields economies: govern-
ment education and religion.
He urged the graduates to
achieve success through "faith
in yourself your fellowmen so-
ciety and nation."
"There is no royal road to
knowledge" he declared and
pointed the graduates to "sac-
rificial toil" as the way to ac-
complish "worthwhile things in
life. '

Woman Buried Here
Mrs. Mao- Hair Bolding Was
Buried Here Monday
Afternoon.
Funeral services were con-
ducted here Monday afternoon
for Mrs. Mae Hair Bolding for-
nier resident of Bartlett who
died in Austin Sunday morning
at 11:58 o'clock.
Mrs. Bolding had been living
in Austin for the past six years.
She was born near Jarrell -on
May 28 1883. She was marVied
to Ed Bolding in Bartlett August
15 1910. At an early age Mr.s.
Bolding joined the Methodist
church and was a member at the
time of her death. She is sur-
vived by her husband Ed Bold-
ing; her father M. P. Hair:
three sisters Mrs. Tom McKen-
zie of El Campo Miss Mary Hair
of El Campo Mrs. Will Rags-
dale of Santa Anna; and four
brothers Henry Hair of Santa
Anna Ollie Hair of Jarrell
Plummer Hair of San Antonio
and Luther Hair of San Antonio.
Methodist Sunday
School Class Given
Luncheon Wednesday
A luncheon was given in the
home of Mrs. R. E. Hudspeth
Wednesday to the members of
Mrs. W. J. Harlan's class of the
Methodist Sunday School. Mrs.
Clyde Richards was joint host-
ess with. Mrs. Hudspeth.
Luncheon tables were decor-
ated with bowls of sweet laven-
der. A handkerchief shower
was given Miss Blanca Thomas

Hillsboro. During the after-
noon "forget-me-nots" of the
past quarter were revealed and
new names drawn.
Officers elected for the new

Mrs. J. N. L. McCurdy
Dies Here Sunday
Was A Citizen of Bartlett
For Twenty-five Years
Mrs. J; N. L. McCurdy died
here last Sunday morning at 7
o'clock after several months of
declining health.
Funeral services were con-
ducted at her home here Mon-
day morning at 9 o'clock by Rev.
Sam Hill. Interment was in
'Locknart where Mrs. McCurdy
lived a number of years ago.
Rev. Hill was aasisted at Lock-
hart by Rev. John McCurdy.
Mrs. McCurdy was was seventy-seven
years old at the time
of her death was born in Mis
sissippi on January '3. 1856. She
was Miss Mary Bridgers before
her marriage at Lockhart in
xvuo 10 j. in. li. .ivicuray. one
lived also in San Marcos and
Waxahachie before moving to
Bartlett in 1908. Mr. McCurdy
died in August 1920
Mrs. McCurdy was a life-long
member of the Presbyterian
church and was known as a wo-
man of lovely .character. She
is survived by two step-sons
Andy McCurdy" of Mission and
Newton McCurdy of Corpus
Christi ; two step-daughters
Mrs. J. W. Shinn of El Paso and
Mrs. P. G. Taylor of Corpus
Christi; a nephew R. S. Bynum
of San Antonio ; and two cousins
L. D. Flowers of Uvalde and
Mrs. La Fayette Ward of San
Antonio. Mrs. Ward will be re-
membered by the older resi-
dents of Bartlett as Louise
Flowers who as a child lived
with Mrs McCurdy and attended
. public school here."

Federated Missionary
Society Meets Monday
The Federated Missionary so-
ciety met at the Baptist church
Monday afternoon for its regu-
lar quarterly meeting. In the
absence of the president Mrs.
J. K. Knight Mrs.' Dimmitt
Whitlow presided. The program
was opened with scripture read-
ing by Mrs. Sam Hill. Mrs.
Worth White sang "Others"
accompanied by. Mrs. A. R.
Grosse. This was followed by
by a talk on "Aims and Objects
of Federated Misionary Work"
by Mrs. Theo. Jones. The pro-
gram concluded with a reading
by Stanley' Schwertner.

Two Greyhound buses full of
Waco citizens on a "good will"
trip stopped in Bartlett Thurs-
day afternoon about five o'clock.
The visitors representatives
of the Waco Chamber of Com-
merce called on the business
men of Bartlett and chatted
with them briefly in their places
of business.

SERVICES HELD IN BART-
LETT CEMETERY LATE
TUES. AFTERNOON
Tribute was paid to the for-
mer soldiers buried in the cem-
eteries of this community in a
Memorial Day service Tuesday
afternoon at 6:30 in the Bart-
lett Cemetery. Rev. Sam Hill
made the address.
Flowers for the occasion were
gathered by a committee head-
ed by Mrs. Dimmitt Whitlow.
Following the invocation by
Rev. J. M. Bond a quartet comr
posed of Messrs. Hudspeth Gil-

trying days of the World War.

built the first rural telephone
line out of Davilla in 1900. In
1902 the company was sold to
the Southwestern Bel! Telephone
