Bee County, located in the Rio Grande plain in South Central Texas, grew out of the early settlement of the area by Irish and Mexican settlers and the 19th-century cattle ranching that continues to this day. Bee County's history has been preserved through the work of the Commission as well as the Rescuing Texas History Project.

Notes

The First National Bank of Beeville was organized on December 30, 1889, and opened in 1890. Prior to the opening of First National Bank, people left their money either in sacks under loose floor boards behind the counter of Captain A.C. Jones’ store on the east side of the Public Square, or in kegs under that same counter. The increase in population and trade volume brought on by the arrival of SA&AP, and the Gulf, Western & Pacific Railroads in the late 1880’s made the establishment of a bank necessary. The First National Bank of Beeville opened on the courthouse square in 1890. In 1894 it relocated to this ornate brick building on the corner of Bowie and North Washington, where it remained for sixty-six years. It moved to 111 East Corpus Christi St. in 1960. In 1984, the bank moved to its present site at 1400 E. Houston St. In business for over a century, it is one of the few independent and locally owned banks in Texas.
