Receive Top Awards
University of Texas women's basketball coach Jody
Conradt told a large crowd at the Holland All-Sports Banquet
that athletic competition Is "one of the few human activities
j that allows us to pursue perfection."
The award winning coach was featured speaker at the
banquet which was held at the School Cafctorium Tuesday
evening.
Several outstanding pthletes received awards at the
banquet. They were: Linda Wcndier Bill Hayes Sport-

Holland's new house
numbering system received
approval at the regular
meeting of the Holland City
Council Monday night at the
City Hall.
The Council also discussed
vandalism and lawbreaking
by a group of juveniles took
action to begin work on a new
ceiling for the Kuhlmanu
Holland
Holland's first annual
Future Farmers of America
(FFA) Banquet was a big
success last Tuesday May 1
with n large number of
parents and students
gathering for a barbecue
meal with all the trimmings
at the Holland School
Cafctorium.

Students Named
Donna Thaler and Andrew
Lindcmann have been named
as Valedictorian and
Salutntorinn rcspcclivley of
the 1979 Bartlett High School
graduating class.
Donna daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Don Thaler ob-
tained a 93.01 average.
Andrew son of Mr. and
Mrs. Marcus Lindemnnn
obtained a 92.15 average.
Baccalaureate services
will be held at 8 p.m. Sun-
day May 20 at St. John
Lutheran Church.
Commencement exercises
arc scheduled for 8 p.m. May
25 in the Bartlett High School
gym.

number that can be easily
seen from the street is
recommended. Having
highly visible numcrs is
necessary so that emergency
vehicles such as fire trucks
ambulances etc. can locate

Weldon Bowman made brief
remarks nt the banquet.
He said that the days of
simple farm life are passed
that now our lives are much
more complex.
"Most of the kids of our day
will not have an opportunity
to learn skills from their Dad
because their Dad's oc-
cupation is so far removed."
He said Vocational
Agriculture can teach skills
that kids would otherwise not

Kristin Kncten a seventh
grader of Bartlett Junior
High School claimed first
place honors in the 48th
Annual Bell County Spelling
Bee Saturday May 5 at
Bonham Jr. High School in
Temple when she correctly
spelled the words
"colloquail" and "column"
from the high school spelling
list.
Kristin is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Garland
Knetcn of Bartlett.
Last years third place
finisher in the Temple Daily
Telegram sponsored event
last years first place winner
In the UIL Meet and this
years third place winner In
the Taylor Press Spelling
Bee Kristin was awarded $50
for first place prize an In-
dividual engraved trophy
and a larger engraved trophy
for her school after correctly
spelling 50 words from the
current Univcristy In-
tcrscholastic League spelling
list including such words as
"embarrass" "car-
cinogenic" progaganda"
"reservoir" and "caffeine."
Second place winner in the
Temple Daily Telegram
sponsored event went to Jon
Marc Goodnight an eighth
grader at Holland Junior
High School. Son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne Goodnight of
Holland Jon received $30.
Mrs. Linda Gaines was Jon's
spelling instructor.
Joan Jones another
Bartlett Junior High student
and seventh grader captured
third place. The daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. James C. Jones
of Bartlett Joan won $20.
Joan was a 1977 first place
winner in the District and
Stale UIL Meet with a 100
percent paper. She was this
years second place winner In
the Taylor Dally Press
Spelling Bee and second
place winner in the UIL Meet
with a 100 percent paper.
Some of the words which
seemed to give the most
addresses quickly in the
event It becomes necessary.
The new house numbers
will be added to the water
bills which will be sent out
June 1. Residents will find
out their new house numbers
at that time.

banquet was provided by Rex

FFA Talent Competition
recently They performed
three country and western
songs for the gathering.

Only 10 students were left
in the contest by the 25th
round when the words were
taken from the high school
section of the UIL booklet. In
this section even the best
spellers stumbled on the
words "acquisitive"
"anemone" and "cabana."
During the final rounds
Kristcn Jon and Joan battled
wits to win the title.
The three only lasted four
rounds before Joan
misspelled the word
"cavalry." Kristin spelled
the word correctly and then
challenged Jon to eight more
rounds before he misspelled
"colloquial." Kristin then
spelled "colloquial" and one
more word "column" to win
the meet.

Spelling Director stated that
she was very pleased with fhe
results of the contest and
very proud of all the con-
testants. They did a superb
job and proved beyond a
doubt hard work courage
determination and
dedication to be a winner.
The contestants began
training in September and
were always willing and
ready to spell. The training
periods were long but they
never despaired nor com-
plained of being tired.
Beginning in January Mrs.
Powell reported "they
reported to my room at 2
p.m. daily and would spell
each afternoon from to as
late as 5:30 and G p.m. often
spelling from 1000 to 2500
mid of few occasions ap
proximately 3000 words.
They also spelled during the
noon play period and at 7:30
a.m It was a joy and a
privileged honor to work with
Club appeared before the
Council to discuss planned
renovation of the Kuhlmann
Civic Center.
Mrs. Thompson felt that
only after the building Is
properly fixed up will it be a
decent memorial to John C.
Kuhlmann Holland civic
leader for whom the building

been promoted to Southwest
Region Sales Coordinator for
Wiisonart Distributors in
Temple.
Henry has been with
Wiisonart for eleven years
having worked in several

Lorianne Carluon
representing both Bartlett
and Bell County was chosen
the 1979 Central Texas Miss
Flame at the convention of
the Central Texas Fireman's
Association in Cameron
Sunday.
The pretty blonde
sophomore at Bartlett High
School was interviewed by a
panel of judges during the
convention. Each contestant
had to answer seven
questions.
After being chosen Bartlett
Miss Flame she was selected
Bell County Miss Flame in
October of last year from n
large number of candidates
representing almost every
fire department in Bell
County.
The Central Texas area
covers 22 counties.

To Be In
Granger Parade
The Bartlett Chamber of
Commerce float which
was named the grand
champion float in out-of-town
competition at the
Rogers Homecoming
Parade on April 30 will be
entered in tho Granger
Homecoming Saturday
May 12.

Monday that a $250000.00
Community Development
Grant has been awarded to
Bartlett by the Department
of Housing and Urban
Development. '
Funds from this grant will
be used for housing
rehabilitation demolition
and streets and drainage.
Schwertner Plans
Plans for the Schwertner
Festival to be held on Sun-
day June 3 were made when
the Schwertner Im-
provement Club met Thur-
sday evening for their
regulur meeting.
A barbecue meal with all
the trimmings will ba served.
Sausage roll-ups and bar-
becue sandwiches will be sold
during the night
The "Farmers Five Mile
Race" was discussed. Entry

president her freshman year.
She is a member of the
Future Homcmakers editor
of the school paper and the
school annual and par-
ticipates in basketball and
tennis.
She won several awards in
the journalism division of the
UIL Literary meet placing
second at district second nt
regional and eighth at state
in headline writing.

RETIRES FROM HANK Mrs. Raille Whitlow (on the
left) was presented with a ruby necklace by Schwertner
State Bank President Bill Schwertner (on the right) on her
retirement after 28 years and 4 months of service with tho
bank. Mrs. Whitlow who retired on May 1 began work nt
the Schwertner bank in the bookkeeping department on
January 2 1951. She was promoted to assistant cashier in
19G2.
