Sheriff E. T.Ray
Announces For
Re-election
To the Voters of Bell County:
In submitting my candidacy
for sheriff to you I want to men
tion the following things that we
have been able to accomplish:
'1. In my original announce-
ment I told you that we would
try to do something about the
drunk driving problem. Through
the cooperation of ALL law en-
forcement agencies Bell county
is now ninth in the state on con
victions for this offense. Approx
imately $31000 m county court
fines alone were collected by this
office in 1949.
2. i runner stated that we
would do the best we could with
lWlinf wn Vinrl 4n ttrivlr ttn44t nwrl
as funds were available. This has
been done and will continue
3. The record will further
show that there has been a
steady increase in the volume of
business and services rendered to
you. Records show there is a net
increase of earnings of more
than 133 and 1-3 percent in 1949
business over that of (1946.
4. We have tried to deal fairly
And impartially with every one
as promised.
5. As promised I have not
practiced or allowed cruel or
brutal treatment of prisoners.
We have had 3900 persons in
jail during my tenure of office.
o. Kegaruing crimes ot a
felony nature since Jan. 1 1947
'n nddition to the seven regular
sessions of the Grand Jury
there have been five special
sessions.
Over 350 indictments have
been returned from these
sessions. This number does not
include several habeas coruus
actions and one case brought
here on a change1 of venue.
If the type of service we are
rendering and the program wo
are trying to carry out meet with
your approval I earnestly solicit
your support.
Respectfully
E. T. (BUCK) RAY

Dial Telephones
Proposed For
Bartlett In '51
Bartlett will have a new
$88000 dial telephone svstem in
service in 1951 if the telephone
company's request for an adjust-
ment in telephone rates is
authorized promptly by the city
C. L. Carson Manager of the
Southwestern Boll Telephone
Company revealed here this
week.
The dial system Carson said
will be modern and complete in
every respect. To provide the
new service a dial telephone
building must be erected a com
plete dial switching system must
be manufactured and installed
here and all telephones in Bart-
lett must toe replaced with dial
instruments.
Bartlett now has more than
uuu telephones over twice as
many as in 1941. This growth of
Bartlett's telephone system has
come at a time when costs pf j
expanding tho telephone system
are at high post-war levels.
Because of tho rapid growth
of Bartlett's telephone system
and tho post-war level of operat
ing costs telephone service is
being furnished in Bartlett at
less than cost Carson said.
The company must have ap
proval of the new schedule of
telephone rates to justify going
ahead with the dial improvement
program uarson said.
The proposed rates are .?2.i0
a month more for business tele-
phones and $1.50 a month more
for residence private line serv
ice and S1.25 for residence two
party service. Rural telephones
will cost $ 1.5J5 a month more xor
business service and $1.00 a
month more for rural residence
service
The discount for wall-type
telephones will be eliminated and
telephone users who have this
typo of instrument will pay an
additional 25 cents a month and
may have desk or handset instru
ments if they prefer.
Rates for various miscellan-
eous services also will be adjust-
ed in relation to the higher post-
war costs of furnishing them.
Carson said that costs of furn
ishing telephone service here
have increased sharply in recent
years much faster than tele-
phone revenues. The Company's
revenue is 103 per cent higher
than in 1941 but expenses have
gone up 170 per cent in the same
period.
