Iii Football Opener
The Bartlett Bulldogs rumb-
led over the Round Rock B
Tli-norma 3fi.fl in n gtirnri.mnir
show of strength to initiate the
1969 football season here Satur
day night.
Bartlett did all its scoring in
the first nnd third periods and
held a 22-0 half time margin.
A new found passing attack
did much of the damage to the
Dragons as quarterback D. A.
Swope hit halfback Wayne Pow-
ell with scoring tosses of G 35
nnd 16 yards. Halfback Donald
Ruemke got the first score on
a three yard burst at tackle and
fullback Daniel White a fresh-
man showed sprinters speed in
finishing the scoring with a 71
vard canter.
Bartlett's offense wns well
divided among individuals and
between rushing and passing.
The Bulldogs rushed for 145
yards and had 130 in the air.
Bartlett managed 14 first
downs twice as many as the
opposition nnd held Round
Rock to 75 yards rushing and
53 passing. Bartlett picked off
two passes and the teams lost
four fumbles each.
Bartlett's stubborn defense
was led by tackle Ken Stauffer
guard Bruce Swope and line-
backer Sam Davis. Tackle Rich-
ard Malmquist led the Dragons.
Round Rock won the toss and
elected to take a good east wind
but the breeze didn't bother
rRuemke as he took the kickoff
all the way back to the Dragon
34 and almost broke for the
score. However a clipping pen-
alty across the field and after
the play was over wiped it out
nnd gave Bartlett a first and 25
on the Dragon 48. Davis
promptly whipped down the
side line for an apparent score
but was ruled out on the 31.
After two firsts and a five yard
penalty set the ball on the three
Ruemke hit left tackle for the
score with 10:16 remaining.
Stauffer's kick was no good.
Round Rock returned the
kickoff to the 35 and made a
first before kicking. Stauffer
blocked the punt and TommV
Street recovered on the Dragdri
31. Powell had a'goqd run called
back because of a clip and then
Swope hit him with a 28 yard
pass and then the same combi-
nation was good for the final
six yards. Swope' swept left end
iur Lite two jjouua anu a i'i-v
lead.
Round Rock Teturned the kick
to the 36 but in attempting a
punt the' kicker missed the ball
with a good rush on and Stauf-
fer claimed it on the Dragon 37.
Swope quickly hit Powell for a
35 yard score and Davis ramm-
ed left tackle for the two points.
Three touchdowns in three pos
sessions.
Round Rock returned the kick
to the 28 but Ruemke inter-
cepted to put the Bulldogs on
the Dragon 39. Bartlett made
a first as the second quarter
began but gave over the ball
on the Dragon 25. The visitors
made two first downs before
Joel Freeman recovered a fum-
ble at the Bartlett 44. The Bull-
dogs ticked off four f jrst downs
before a fumble ended the drive
at the 11.
Round Rock made three first
downs then including a 25 yard
pass interference penalty before
the half ran out.
Davis returned the third per
iod kickoff to the Dragon 42
and after a first Swope passed
to Powell for a 16 yard score
and Davis made it 30-0 with a
blast up the middle.
Round Rock returned the kick
and fumbled with Bartlett re-
covering on the Dragon 37.
The Dragons then recovered a
fumble on the 17 but had to
kick out to the Bartlett 44. The
Bulldogs got a five yard penalty
back to the 39 but it didn't
make any difference to Daniel
White as he showed his heals
to everyone on a 71 yard scamp-
er. The kick missed leaving the
score au-u.
Round Rock returned the kick
o the 35 and made a first be-fn-p
kicking to the- Bulldog 44.
Bartlett made three firsts be1-
fore a fumble halted the drive
on the 23. They fumbled back to
Buzz Hill on the Dragon 30 ak
the final period began but re-
serves gave over the ball at the
81 Powell intercepted a pass
and returned to the 47.
