-Tone telephones.
If a picture call is desired
the person initiating it will start
by punching a symbol located
at the lower right hand corner
of the 12-button display on the
Touch-Tone phone. Then ho
punches the desired number and
waits for his connection. A dis-
tinctive ring tells the called
party that this is a Picture-
phone call rather than an ordi-
nary call.
Both parties have the option
of turning the picture off or
on at any time. In addition if
a picturephone subscriber wish-
es to make a call to an ordinary
non-picture receiver he simply
punches out the desired num-
ber and the call will go through
as normal without sending or
receiving a picture.
Crittenden said AT&T recent-
ly completed an experimental
Pictureephone service trial be-
tween the offices of Westing-
house company in New York
and Pittsburgh. As a follow-up
ionally-lighted television stud
ios but rather by anyone in a
bright or dark home or office.
The Westinghouse experi-
ment emphasized the value in
time and money of Picture-
phone service to bus'nesses. In-
stant face-to-face conferences
between company officials are
being conducted on the phone
eliminating the need for travel
or conferencees. Charts statis-
tics and diagrams and scale
models could be flashed on the
screen and received across the
country immediately.
Southwestern Bell sees these
applications extended to every-
day 1'fe in the future. The
housewife may call her butcher
and choose cuts of meat pver
the telephone. She could pur-
chase fashiona by long distance
from dress salons in New York
or Dallas. And lovers would
never again need to worry about
the proverb "Out of sight out
of mind."
