choit with terrible force He Jumped out
of the bed grabbed his pistol and com-
menced to fire Into he darkness hoping
to strlko the assailant but eery ahot
aimlessly llred brought down the chunk
of nnort In return The darkness in the
loom kept the robber from hitting with
any etfoct while Mr Heard was ns cf
fottuaJl > checked by the darknen and by
his wlfo who was frantically hanging to
bis arms When the sixshooter was
emptied a scuffle ensued during which the
robber wrung the pistol from the hands
of the plucky but now worn out Mr
Heard and escaped A shot from a double
barreled shotgun was sent after the rob
ber but accurate aim tn the dnrknem was
Impossible and the Intrude escaped

cates to applicants who heretofore held
only county certlllcates This has been
done In pursuance of a recent law passed
by the Twentythird legislature on the
8th of August bust The substance of that
liw Is that school teachers who hold sec
ond or higher grade certlllcates from
counties to teach In those counties are
peimltled to send such certificates and In
liei thereof get certificates to teach any-
where In tho State This is very conve-
nient at times because a teacher in a
county one year may not have a scnool
the next and can use the State certlll

Ten dollar for contempt of court said
