The people here are greatly puzzled to
upw how the report got out that State
angers were needed at this place The
Jofit correspondent has lived here ten
rs and he has never known a more
pany ls doing It however and there Is no
secret about It A removal of the Port
Arthur differential would shut Port Ar-
thur out ot Texas business Did not un-
derstand that the convmtsilon was hero to
legislate ln favor of a few South Texas
lines or of an aggregation of Galveston
ship brokers As to the depth ot water
in the Port Arthur channel Mr Scovel
said that It was twentyfit e feet up to
within half a mile ot the slip Thought
that a twentyfive foot depth would be
ohlalned the whole dlstanco In about six-
ty days
Mr Moller asserted that no ship had
come to Port Arthur this year that rould
sut two months agoslnce which time he not have loaded on tbe depth of water
been confined to his bed He has obtaining there without lighterage He
ja with tbe International and Great thought that the Port Arthur Channel and

the lo s of revenue had amounted to
19 12 cento per 100 pounds In comparison
with what would have been earned had It
gone to Galveston Hla line had also
handted 2000 bales of cotton for Port
Arthur via Galveston on whfch It had
suffered a loss of revenue of 13 cents per
100 pounds under the same comparison
From this he argued that under the pres
ent adjustment Port Arthurs disabilities
aro being equalized at the expense of tho
transportation lines Cotton going to
Port Arthur via Galveston and the Gulf
and Interstate has Mr Paukelt said to
pay a trackage charge at 50 cents par
car In addition to tho Gulf and Inter-
states division as there Is no way for It
to reach Port Bolivar except by passing
over the wharf companys tracks
Chairman Reagan said It was never
contemplated by the commission that
trackage should be collected by the wharf
company on cara passing through Gal
veston for other ports
said the reason existing for originally
establishing the Port Arthur differential
still exists as the contemplated twenty
he foot depth of water in the Port Ar-

was strange to hear that an old pot and
