public works has issued a call for an
unlimited number of workmen to go
to the ruined districts to help in the
rescue work and to testore order out
of the coas everywheie Many men

aie responding These forces will be
mobolized here and distributed to the
various cities as they are needed
rescue party at Messina has discoverj
ed Marquis Semola alive in the ruins
of Mins Castle but it will require
many days work before he can be
libei ated This discovery inspires the
hope that other survivors may be still
in the ruins and all probable places
are being searched

eral constitution hat been violated by
the decision and it is supposed that
this will be made the basis for the
appeal to the federal comt The

in her own defense Jhs Florence
Erb today described the killing of her
husband Ciptain Eib formerly the
secietaiy of Isreal Dm ham the politi-
cal boss of Philadelphia for which
murder Mrs Erb and her sister Airs
Beisel are on trial Mrs Erb said
the shooting followed a terrible strug-
gle between Mrs Beisel and Erb over
the possession of a revolver She de
claied that Erbattacked her with a
revoher wlieii her sister Interfered
Erb then tried to shoot Mis Beisel
when the two struggled over the re
voher Erb was drunk and slipped
and fell during the struggle and then
Mrs Beisel fired and killed him The
killing occurred in Erbs house

lars In making up this statement it
is shown that in addition to the havoc
vrouglit in the towns and along the
coast fortytwo hundred ships were
destroyed King Victor has exhaust-
ed all of his available cash fund in

sale of his Sicilian estates to aid the
sufferers Queen Helena is on the

been dismissed as grand counsellor
and as commander in chief of the
army and Na Tung controller of cus-
toms succeeds him It is announced
that the dismissal was due to ill
health but the real reason is thought
to be because Yuan was not in sym-
pathy with the new regime

Tunnel In Mexico
Laredo Texas Jan 1 While the
through train to the City of Mexico
which left Laredo last night was en
teringsthe tunnel at Rinconada Pass
just beyond Monterey a fire occurred
in the toilet room of the firstclass
coach and before the train could be
stopped outside the tunnel one of the
lady and gentleman passengers were
burned to death The coach was burn-
ed completely up
