American Consul at Acapulco Says
No Americans Lost Lives In
Big Theatre Fire
Washington D C Feb 16 Max-
well K Morehead American consul at

department today that no Americans
were killed in the fare which de
stroyed a theatre there Sunday night

Details of the Fire
City of Mexico Feb 15 Between
250 and 300 persons were burned to
death and many injured in a fire
which destroyed the Flores Theatre
in the city of Acapulco last night
The news of the disaster reached this
capital this evening telegraphic com
munication with Acapulco having been
destioyed during last night and today
owing to the fact that the telegraph
office adjoining the theatre was de-
stroyed and all wires were put out of
commission
The Floies Theatre was a wooden
structure and last night over a thou
sand people crowded into it to wit-
ness a special perfoimance given in
honor of Governor Damian Flores of

The new charter fixes the
taxing power of the city at
what it now is This means
the tax rate will remain the
same To secure a higher rate
than is permitted by state law
for a town of Palestines popu-
lation an amendment to the
new charter would have to be
secured
Then again the people are
protected by the recall fea-
ture If the commissioners at

qualified voters could order an
election without the consent
of the commissioners and a
majority of the votes cast at
such an election would fire the
whole bunch should they at-
tempt anything arbitrary or
against the wishes of the peo-
ple Study the charter and
jou will fall in love with it
It makes the people in truth
ttie ones who govern
ing the port at the time One of the
numbers on the program consisted of
a series of moving pictures
While the operator was exhibiting
these a film caught fire and the blaze
was quiclvly communicated to some
bunting which had been used for deco-
rative purposes
In an incredibly short time the
flames spread to all parts of the struc-
ture There wrere but three narrow
exits and the panicstricken audience
lushed to these many falling and be-
ing crushed to death thus choking
the way to escape with their bodies
The sci earns ot those imprisoned
were terrifj ingand heartrending Ow-
ing to the rapidity with which the fire
spiead and to its intense heat it was
impossible to attempt rescue work
and those imprisoned were literally
toasted alive as the fire burned with
little smoke and few were suffocated
The efforts of the fire department
were confined to attempting to save
the adjoining buildings and they suc-
ceeded so that the property loss was
small The telegraph office postofficc
and custom house were damaged but
all of the government records and
registered mail was saved
