TUBERCULAR CURE AND PRE
TENTION
The National Association for the
Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis
has issued a statement regarding the
treatment of consumption in which
the declaration is made that the only
sure cure for the disease is fresh air
rest and wholesome food says the
San Antonio Express
Consumption is a germ which de-
stroys portions of the lungs or other
affected tissues and no drugs or in-
haled gases can by any means kill
the germs or close up the vacity in
the lungs it is contended To inhale
a germicide strong enough to kill the
consumption germ according to this
authority would kill the patient be-
fore it would the germ
Nevertheless consumption is de-
clared to be curable and the state-
ment is made that in some place0
more than 75 per cent of the patients
under treatment have heen restored
to health The essentials as beforp
stated are fresh air rest and whole-
some food and the patient in order
to realize the full benefit of these
must live as much as possible mil
of doors and subject himself as littlr
as possible to the physical strain of
overwork and the mental strain of
worry and useless endeavor These
conditions are not so difficult to ful-
fill perhaps as the requirements as
to wholesome food for opinions and
tastes differ as to what is wholesome
food
Concerning certain alleged discov-
eries of consumption cures which
have been exploited but are kept
secret the association asserts tbat
secrecy as to the remedy tends to
discredit inasmuch as it is not to be
believed that a responsible physician
would find a cure for such a disease
and refuse to make it known for the
benefit of humanity through any pe-
cuniary consideration In the state-
ment issued it is said that a large
number of physicians have been work-
ing for years to perfect a vaccine or
antitoxin for tuberculosis or to find
some agent such as tuberculin which
will assist in the cure of the disease
Thus far the experiments have not
furnished a product which will either
absolutely cure or prevent consump-
tion or render the patient immune
against the disease Many of these
serums have proved effective in in-
creasing the resistance of the patient
and thus helping in the cure but no

scientist of repute today claims to
have discovered a tuberculin which
will produce a cure without the com-
bined aid of fresh air rest and whole-
some food
The learned Dr Koch and others
have then done no more for the cure
of the great white plague than to in-
crease the power of resistance through
the aid of drugs hut the scientists

GOOD ROADS DOCTRINE
In a timely article on good roads
the Greenville Herald remarks
Good roads should not be consid-
ered a tax but an investment Too
often the standpatters who think that
because the Lord did not make roads
noneare needed frequently raise the
cry of increased taxation to ptey upon
the fears of the unthinking The Lord
never made houses but man has gone
on for lo these many years building
houses and he has nevei1 thought of
it increasing his taxes Good roads
facilitate the conduct of business just
as the house facilitates the comfort of
living and it is often the case just in
nropoition to the facilities of the con-
duct of business comes the ability to
build houses for the facilitation of the
comfort of living The present high
state of efficiency in the industrial
world which goes to make the civiliza-
tion that surrounds us has come
through increased facilities for com-
munication but the roads the first
means of communication aside from
the water courses are in this age the
last to receive attention in this line
There is no economy in a poor road
There is less in every mile of unpas
sable road that exists The road to
town often controls all the profits on
the farm if the farmer would but see
it If there is any tax in the road
proposition it comes through the tax
that it putB upon the profits of the
farm through inability to get the pro-
ducts to market economically

THE AMERICAN BOY
At the hanquet of Baptist Young
People Judge Nelson spoke on the vi-
tally important Problem of the Amer-
ican Boy In setting forth the prob-
lem the judge suggested two solu-
tions He said that 75 per cent of
the nations criminals today are
youths that 80 per cent of those
youths never had any industrial edu-
cation and that 90 per cent of the
youths in our reformatories never had
received industrial training He be-
lieved that the acquirement of some
useful trade is one way of solving the
problem
The judge also called attention to
the fact that the very large propor
tion of cases of youthful delinquency
arises from the lack of parental con-
trol and training The facts abund-
antly confirm this opinion of the
judge and they form an indictment
against the parents of America The
judge affinned tbat it was not the
country boy for whom Tie need to
feel specially alarmed hut for the city
vouth surrounded and assailed by the
temptations that seem to he a neces-
sary part of our modern municipal
life It is the city boy who especially
needs parental guidance protection
control but alas these are the days

The Palestine sewerjsystem will
most likely soon be extended to the
northern part of the city where it
has long been needed Now let the
city enfoice the ordinance compelling
those alieady on the line to connect
up their premises And this should
bo done before another summer

estine people some of them are so
lacking in civic pride that a few
fines assessed would be of immense
educational value There are ieti >
tacles for trash and it should never
be thrown into the streets
Even the commissioners under the
new charter can be called down if
they go wrong or if they in an > way
fail to do heir duty The recall fea
ture of the chatter fives that If a
set of men elected prove a failure the
citizerfs can call for a new deal And
that is a pretty good plan When a
man gets to be bigger than his job
he can be chucked And this ap-
plies to all even the mayor
What a beautiful thoroughfare Ave-

grass and the grass well kept There
is not a prettier street anywhere in
or out of Texas than that would be
Let those having property abutting
that street try it out along these lines
and set the pace for the rest of the
town
There are few things necessary
that are not covered by the proposed
hew charter The city government
will he given more power to do the
things needed to be done The com-
missioners can work by not being
hampered by elective officers who will
not do or who fail to do the things
they are supposed to do The com-
missioners can force them to do their
duty or fire > them And often a man
