The Jew in the America of today
is a very important factor in the up
building of the country for at every
Junction in every crisis he has made
the cause of this country his own be-
cause he knew himself to be and is an
integral part of the American people
There is not a field in the entire
range of commerce and of professional
life which the Jew has not occupied
and developed Every branch of
manufacture has been stimulated and
improved by him Many facts have
combined to bring about this result
This is a century which with all its
fads and fancies is fatal to prejudices
however ancient and the Jew has be-
come recognized His services in the
struggle for intellectual and religious
liberty are more appreciated and the
edge of antipathy so sharp and un
relenting of old is losing much of its
keenness He now enjoys the benefits
of Free Institutions and equal treat-
ment before the Law
When the foreign Jew arrives in
America he is hungrier for knowl-
edge than for money scholarship is
what he worships American Customs
and Atmosphere are to him what a
flood of sunshine is to the blind lie
may feel its warmth but the brilliant
beams are not for him It is only af-
ter a sojourn of a few years that his
viewpoint begins to broaden Then
he begins to realize that in the whole
history of his people the Jew never
had a period of tranquility parallol to
the present in the United States
The Jow has had so few opporuni
ties that he appreciates one the mo-
ment he sees it Self Help was a
Jewish habit long before Emerson
made it a philosophy In the college
of New York City th > mojorlty of the
students are Jews and similar condi-
tions exist ln all other largo public
educational institutions and it is a
rare case when several or at least one
Jew pupil fails to carry off a scholar-
ship Jewish students are not only
helping themselves in satisfying their
thirst for knowledge but act as a
stimulant to their nonJewish collea-
gues
The Chicago University especially
owes a debt to its Jewish frlojnds

der his guidance it has grown from an
occasional lecture to its present
status A lecture for every night in
the week on every possible subject in
every portion of the city and these
lectures are well attended that there
is standing room only
Jews hold professorships in al-
most every great college in the United
States Soloman Schecter of the
Jewish Theological Seminary in New
York is the greatest discoverer not
only of ancient cities but of ancient
manuscripts and whose acquaintance
not only with Hebrew but with Uni-
versal Literature has made him for
years the dominant figure in the most
brilliant university circles
Among Jewish writers of America
can be mentioned A Cohen the dra-
matic critic better known under the

cal conductors are Sam Frank Alfred
Hertz and Walter Damrosch the lat-
ter is contributing more than any

tion of music
