the resolutions offered by Senators Chan-
dler and Gibson f > r the investigation of
recent elections in Louisiana and other
states and memorials as to political asso-

laid on the table and also reported an
original resolution instructing the com-
mittee on privileges and elections to in-
quire whether in any state the free and
lawful expression of the will of the people
in the election of members of the Fifty
llrst congress and ascertaining
if the results thereof have
been prevented by violence
intimidation fraud or other crime Also
to inquire into the recent election in
Louisiana in 1S88 and to ascertain
whether that state has a republican form
of government the committee to report
at the session to be held in December
1889Mr
Mr Salisbury on behalf of the Demo-
cratic members of the committee on
privileges and elections expressed an
utter dissent from the resolution reported
on the ground that the senate had no
jurisdiction over the question
This resolution was on the objection
by Mr Gorman laid over till tomorrow
After some routine business the senate
proceeded to the consideration of Mr
Vests motion to reconsider the vote on
which the conference report on the direct
tax bill was agreed to Inst Saturday
After considerable debate motion to re-
consider was rejected yeas 8 nays 48
The senate theu took up the sundry
civil appropriation bill
THE HOUSE
Washington Feb 19 Pursuant to
agreement the floor was accorded for
one hour to the committee on printing
and a number of extra copies of various
public documents were ordered printed
The hour having expired the house went
into committee of the whole on the post
oflice appropriation bill
The committee rose for the purpose of
considering the conference report on the
bill to repay direct the tax which was
presented by Mr Caswell who stated
that Mr Oates of Alabama had refused
to sign the report Mr Oates was not
present when Mr Caswell submitted the
report and this fact was called to Mr
Caswells attention but that gentleman
said in view of the necessity for an early
action on the conference report he must
demand the previous question
The famous deadlock of last season
was recalled
Mr Crisp of Georgia arose to a ques-
tion of consideration and Mr Eogors of
Arkansas Mr Breckeuridge of Ken-
tucky and MrMcMillen of Tennessee
in quicksuccession interjected motions to
adjourn to take recess and to adjourn
until Thursday
At this moment Mr
chamber and Mr Caswell
tion to this fact but the
from the Democratic side
Oates left the
called atten
ouly response
was loud de
mand for the regular order
A motion to adjourn until Thursday
having been voted down Mr Morse of
Massachusetts entered the ranks of the
lilibusters with a motion to adjourn until
Friday next
2so quorum voted on Mr Morses mo-
tion and a call of the house was ordered
Then finding it would be impossible to
secure a vote on the conference report
today Mr Caswell withdrew the matter
from the consideration of the house an-
nouncing that he would call it up tomor-
row
The house then resumed in committee
of the whole the consideration of the
postofDco appropriation bill
The session of the house tonight was a
perfect parody on legislation The parody
continued until 10 oclock when the ses-
sion expired by limitation
Dr J P McLendon of Calvert was
deaf fourteen years and spent hundreds
of dollars but found uo relief until ho-

a Splendid Flow of Natural Gas Is Struck
Special to the Gazette
San Antonio Tex Feb 19 The
Crystal ice company of this citv struck
what they consider a bonanza today in
the form of natural gas They had been
boring an artesian well on their plant
near the San Antonio river and when a
depth of 273 feet was reached au im
menso volume of water commenced
spouting which threw off a strong gaseous
odor The applying of a match to the
sparkling column had the ef-
fect of producing a lurid flame which shot
thirteen feet above the surface
of the ground It had been burning all
day and tho well has been visited by
hundreds of curious people since the dis-
covery was made The company is one
of the wealthiest concerns in Texas and
declare it their intention to prosecute
their lucky strike to its ultimatum be-
lieving in a short while they will be able
0 light the entire city with natural gas

to look as if Galveston was not going to
have any base ball this season The

i maintain a team in the state league have
failed to collect enough to warrant the

given them having expired the majority
of the players who had signed a contract

class and was made up as follows
CRourke and Rogers catchers

chers Levis first base Wentz second
base Godar short stop Mikado
Flynn third base Works left field
Sunday center field and Burkmeyer a

spring medicine for two reasons
1st The body is now more susceptible to
benefit from medicine than at any other season
2d The impurities which have accumulated
in the blood should be expelled and the sys-
tem given tone and strength before the pros-
trating effects of warm weather are felt
