nent cattlemen of the county. The Cattle Brand Re-
cord in the county clerk's office has hundreds of inter-
esting old brands.
Thus the story of old settlements, old trails, and
famous cowmen are closely woven into the history of
Denton County.
SAM BASS
Perhaps, the most widely known character who has
lived in Denton County is Sam Bass, an Indiana youth,
who wandered into Texas when he was about nineteen
years old. The boy's parents died when he was young
and at an early age Sam felt the urge to wander away
from home. When he was about seventeen he traveled
across the country to St. Louis, where he took a steam-
boat to Rosedale, Mississippi. He lived one year in
this state before his roving nature took possession of
him again. Next, in 1870, we find him in Denton
County, working on a sheep ranch for W. F. Egan,
where he put in four good years of satisfactory work.
The horse racing business finally won his interest, and
for a short time he entered the betting game for all it
was worth, sometimes winning, often losing.
At one time Bass and two. of his friends made a trip
to the Indian Territory where Bass entered his Denton
sorrel mare on the race track with some Indian ponies.
Sam's mare won but the Indians would not release the
