wood was used to fire the locomotives. One
time the sparks caught the grass on fire,
burning the woodpile, also some pastureland.
The first post office at Rural (Footout) was
established January 20, 1892. Richard A.
Rymer was postmaster.
In 1886, Richard and Annie Rymer moved
from Shreveport, Louisiana, with their nine
children: Jack, Joe, Wallace, and twin sister
Marion, Clara, William Sue, Maude and
Ernest Rymer. They bought a home and farm
at Footout, built a cotton gin, grist mill and
general store there. Their son, Albert, and a
daughter, Emily, were born there. They built
a new home during the time they lived there,
which they sold in 1900 and moved to Iredell.

McClintock home which housed Help Post Office
(1892-1908). Pictured are Anna and Thomas
McClintock and sons.
Records received from Washington, D.C.,
show an entry for the Help Post Office in
1892. Help was located at the crossroads less
than a mile north of the Spring Creek Schools
and the Spring Creek Cemetery.
Elizabeth A. Smith was installed as post-
mistress in 1892 and held the post until June,
1894. William G. Kennedy was installed in
July, 1903, but no records were available to
indicate when the post office closed. There
was also a store at the crossroads which was
open for business in the 1930's.
