High-scoring women roundballers crush Tarietbn
By LAURIE LEE
Women's Sports Editor
Last Tuesday night the
women's basketball team blew
away the notion that women
never get into high scoring games
and any misconceptions that the
men's basketball team at ACU
has a corner on the action. The
Wildcats crushed Tarleton State
by a phenomenal 103-69 score.
The Wildcats now have a
season record of 9-5 and are
ranked No. 1 in the TAIAW
Division II poll.
The night before the Wildcats
ably handled Texas A&I 77-46.
ACU took control early in the
Tarleton game with a 10-point
lead. The Wildcats maintained
the lead throughout the game.

been shooting in the double
figures consistently but had an
especially hot night from the
floor hitting 13 field goals. Added
to three free throws her total of
29 points led the offense.
Bonnie Buchanan already
receiving much publicity put in
22 points and grabbed 11 of the
team'stotal 42 rebounds.

Wildcats welcome Buchanan Compton

Sometimes' a new kid in town
can add spark to a team.
Sometimes welcoming the return
of a familiar face gives a team a
lift. The women's basketball
team is benefiting from both this
semester in the presence of
newcomer Bonnie Buchanan and
former player Coilla Compton.
Buchanan is a junior 5-U
forward transferring from
Stephen F. Austin State
University. She comes frqm May
where during her senior year
she led her high school basketball
team to a second place finish in
the state tournament

her scoring success with 18.
Jordan hustled on 'defense to
contribute to the team total of 19
steals.
The entire team looked sharp
as it successfully broke
Tarleton's press and used each
Other to gel the open shot. "We
had a good team effort and hit a
high percentage from the floor"
said ACU coach Burl McCoy.
Tarleton could not stop the
Wildcats as they broke away to a
30-point lead. Freshmen saw
some action late in the game and
continued to score for the
Wildcats.
Jordan summed it up saying.
"We're getting confidence and
everyone is putting out 100
percent."
On Monday the .Wildcats used
the first game of the season for a
fresh start. The Wildcats ap-
peared to be a different team
from that of finals week.
Newcomer Buchanan retur-
ning Compton and a recharged
ACU squadcompleted the picture
to secure the 77-46 victory for the
Wildcats.
McCoy was enthusiastic about
the team's performance. "I
thought we looked super. We had
tremendous workouts last week
and we wereup for the game" he
said.

Quality enthusiasm excite McCoy
By LAURIE LEE
Women's Sports Editor
To say the future looks
promising for the women's
basketball team is putting it
mildly.
"As a coach I feel so fortunate.
We have good players in every
position. The enthusiasm is
running high and I'm really
excited about it" said ACU coach
Burl McCoy.
With the addition of Bonnie
Buchanan and Coilla Compton to
the team this semester ACU now
seems to possess the strength in
offense and defense and certainly
the depth to challenge even the
toughest opponent.
North Texas was the third team
since the holidays to test that
premise playing last night in
Moody Coliseum. McCoy said
earlier this week that he didn't
expect North Texas to be as much
of a challenge as Tarleton the
team ACU crushed 103-69
Tuesday night but added that
he may be surprised. North
Texas has a big team but is slow
and not as experienced as the
Wildcats.
The Wildcats will travel to
Angelo State Saturday hoping to
even the bcore with the Rambells.
ACU lost to Angelo earlier in the
season but McCoy said he feels
confident about reversing the
decision. s
"We shouldn't have lost to
them before and I think we can
definitely handle them now"
McCoy said. Angelo State is
ranked third in the latest TAIAW
Division II poll.
But the toughest of the next
four games is expected to be UT-
Arlington. Arlington has several
six-footers and a very capable
point guard McCoy said.
"I've said all along that UT-
Arlington would be one of our
toughest. They beat us last year
by a close score" McCoy said.
McCoy believes ACU is better
this year and is confident about a
victory.
ACU will face Lubbock
Christian Jan 25th in Moody.
ACU has one victory over LCC
this season and McCoy expects
another.
He said it will give the younger
players a chance to play. "I'm
hoping it will give the starters
some rest and our freshmen some
time on the court."
