Professorship
established

ACU's faculty of agriculture will
recognize the donors and the recipient
of the department's first endowed pro-
fessorship at a dinner in the Presi-
dent's Dining Room In the Campus
Center Friday.
The funds for the professorship
came from the sale of 160 acres of pro-
perty outside of Colorado City. Mrs.
Bray Cook deeded the land to ACU in
1961 in memory of her husband a
stock farmer with an interest in soil
conservation.
The land was rented until last year
when the university decided the sale of
the property would be a highly
recognizable and permanent memorial
to the donors and the sale would pro-
vide the money for the establishment
of a professorship.
The purpose cf the professorship is
to supplement a chosen professor's
salary and research budget. Also a

An ACU graduate will be honored and
an endowment fund will be established
in his name said Dr Robert D.
Hunter vice president of the universi-
ty in a press conference Wednesday.
Former Texas Chief Justice Jack
Pope a '34 graduate of ACU will be
honored with a tributary dinner and a
goal of $250000 to be raised for the
Jack Pope Endowment Fund Hunter
sold.
The fund will endow a seminar for
student leaden at the state's public
and private colleges and universities.
There these leaders can listen to pro-
minent public servants said State Rep.
Gary Thompson a member of the din-
ner's steering committee.
To make this possible the dinner
honoring Pope will begin at 7 p.m.
Nov. 13 in the La Mansion Hotel in

Reeves dean of the College of Natural
and Applied Sciences.
The first recipient of the Bray Cook
Professorship of Agriculture is Dr.
FM.Chuchlll professor of
agriculture. Churchill is valued not
only for his outstanding teaching abili-
ty but for his workwhh students out-
side of the university setting said
Reeves.
Churchill attends the Fifth and
Grape Church of Christ where he acts
as "unofficial university minister"
said Reeves.
The Cook's children Mrs. David
Howell from Lake Jackson and B.H.
Cook from Claredon are both ACU
graduates.
The Bray Cook professorship is the
second professorship in the College of
Natural and Applied Sciences and the
fifth in the entire university.

wide committee has assembled to
honor one of our most distinguished
graduates" Hunter said.
Those wishing o attend the dinner
may contibute sums of $1000 $2500
$5000 or $10000 to the fund or pur-
chase tickets at a cost of $100 per
place.
Hunter said the seminars would
greatly benefit; student leaders.
Thompson said "Any time you ex-
pose college students to great Ideas
you are doing something
outstanding."
Pope b noted for his public service
and it is fitting that the fund will be in
his name Hunter said.
Hudson Smart a prominent Abilene
lawyer and long-time friend of Pope
said at the conference "Jock Pope is
the most outstanding example of
public service I know" he said.

degree in accounting from ACU in
1962 and also graduated from
Baylor Law School in 1965. He is
an elder at Prestoncrest Church of
Christ in Dallas.
